Originanddevelopment

Developmenthistory
Workflowtechnologyoriginatedintheresearchworkinthefieldofofficeautomationinthemid-1970s,buttheemergenceofworkflowideasshouldhavebeenearlier.In1968,FritzNordsieckhadclearlyExpressedtheideaofusinginformationtechnologytoautomatetheworkflow.Researchworkrelatedtoworkflowinthe1970sincluded:theprototypesystemSCOOPdevelopedbyMichaelD.ZismanoftheWhartonSchooloftheUniversityofPennsylvania,andtheOfficeTalkseriesdevelopedbyClarenceA.EllisandGaryJ.NuttoftheXeroxPaloAltoResearchCenter.Thetestsystem,aswellasthe"monitoringsoftwarefailurereport"programonARPANETdevelopedbyAnatolHoltandPaulCashman.ThesystemsdevelopedbySCOOP,OfficetalkandAnatolHoltalluseacertainvariantofPetrinetsforprocessmodeling.Amongthem,SCOOPandOfficetalksystemsnotonlymarkedthebeginningofworkflowtechnology,butalsotheearliestofficeautomationsystems.
Inthe1970s,peoplewerefullofstrongoptimismaboutworkflowtechnology.Researchersgenerallybelievedthatnewtechnologiescouldbringhugeimprovementsinofficeefficiency.However,thisexpectationeventuallyfellthrough.Peoplehaveobservedsuchaphenomenonthatasuccessfulorganizationtendstocreativelybreakthestandardofficeprocessattherighttime;theintroductionofworkflowtechnologymakespeopleonlyobeythefixedprocessrigidly,whichultimatelyleadstolowofficeefficiencyandpeopleDisliketechnology.Thetechnicalreasonsforthefailureofworkflowtechnologyinthe1970sinclude:theuseofpersonalcomputersintheofficehasnotyetbeenacceptedbythesociety,networktechnologyisnotyetwidespread,anddevelopersstilldonotunderstandtheneedsanddefectsofgroupwaretechnology.

InAugust1993,theWorkflowManagementAlliance(WfMC),anindustrialorganizationforthestandardizationofworkflowtechnology,wasestablished.In1994,theWorkflowManagementAlliancereleasedaworkflowreferencemodelforinteroperabilitybetweenworkflowmanagementsystems,andsuccessivelyformulatedaseriesofindustrialstandards.
Theacademicresearchonworkflowtechnologyisalsoveryactive.Manyprototypesystemshavebeendevelopedinthelaboratory.,Correctnessverification,resourcemanagement,developmentprocessandotheraspectsoftheworkflowtechnologyarediscussed,andalargenumberofpapershavebeenwritten.
