InMarch1881,atthestrongrequestofLosAngelesresidents,theCaliforniaStateAssemblyestablishedthesouthernpartofCaliforniaStateTeachersCollege(thepredecessorofSanJoseStateUniversity)indowntownLosAngeles.TrainingteachersforthegrowingpopulationofSouthernCalifornia.ThisLosAngeles-basedStateNormalUniversitywasestablishedonAugust29,1882.TheoriginalsiteislocatedintheCentralBuildingoftheLosAngelesPublicLibrary.Thisfacilityincludesanelementaryschool,whichprovidestraineeteacherswithopportunitiestoengageineducationalpracticewithchildren.Thiselementaryschoolwasthepredecessoroftoday'sUCLALabSchool.In1887,CaliforniaStateNormalUniversityofficiallychangeditsnametoLosAngelesStateNormalCollege.In1914,thecollegemovedtoanewcampuslocatedonVermontAvenueintheEastHollywoodDistrict(thecurrentlocationofLosAngelesCityCollege).

In1917,EdwardAugustDickson,thedirectoroftheUniversityofCalifornia,whorepresentedtherightsofthesouthernUnitedStates,andErnestCarrollMoore,thedirectoroftheStateNormalCollege,lobbiedthestatelegislaturetogether,promptingthecollegetobecomeasuccessortotheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.Thesecondcampusafterthebranchcampus.ButthismotionwasmetwithresistancefromalumnifromtheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,aswellasoppositionfrommembersoftheNorthernCaliforniaAssembly.Atthesametime,BenjaminEdWheeler,whoservedasthechairmanoftheUniversityofCaliforniafrom1899to1919,alsostronglyresistedtheestablishmentofthesoutherncampus.However,DavidPressBarros,thenewchairmanoftheUniversityofCalifornia,heldtheoppositeviewwithWheeler.OnMay23,1919,theeffortsoftheSouthernCaliforniansfinallypaidoff.GovernorWilliamDennisonStephenssignedBill626ofParliamentintothelaw,whichmadetheformerLosAngelesNormalCollegemergedintotheUniversityofCaliforniaandbecameitsbranchcampusinSouthernCalifornia.ThisbillalsointroducedgeneralundergraduatecoursesintothesyllabusandcreateditsCollegeofHumanities.OnSeptember15ofthesameyear,theSouthernSectionoftheUniversityofCaliforniawasestablishedtoprovidetwo-yearundergraduateeducationfor250studentsintheliberalartscollegeand1,250studentsintheteachers’college.

UndertheleadershipofthePresidentoftheUniversityofCalifornia,WilliamWallaceCampbell,theenrollmentofthesouthernbranchincreasedsorapidlythatinthemid-1820s,theinstitutionhadtoexpandItislocatedoutsideof25hectaresoflandonFalmontAvenue.Therefore,inordertomeetthedemandfornewlanduse,theschoolboardiscommittedtofindinganewschoolsite.OnMarch21,1952,theschoolboardannouncedthatthenewschoolsitewaslocatedonthewestsideofBeverlyHills,adjacenttothethenvacantParosVerdesPeninsula.In1926,theUCLAsportsteamjoinedthePacificCoastLeague.Afterthismeeting,thestudentunionofthesouthernpartoftheschoolusedthename"Bruins"giventothembythestudentunionofBerkeley.In1927,theboardofdirectorsnamedthesoutherncampus"UniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeles"(UniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeles)("在"wasofficiallyreplacedbyacommain1958(UniversityofCalifornia).California,LosAngeles),correspondingtoothercampusesoftheUniversityofCalifornia).Inthesameyear,thestategovernmentstartedworkonapieceoflandinWestwoodDistrict,whichsoldforonemillion,whichwaslessthanone-thirdofitstruevalue.ThelandwassoldbyEdwinandHaroldJens,andJanssStepswasnamedafterit.

Developmentprocess

In1951,whenRaymondB.Allenwasappointedastheschool’sfirstprincipal,theUCLAscoreincreasedtoalevelwithCalifornia.ThesamestatusastheUniversityofBerkeley(Co-equalStatus).Priortothis,theprincipaloftheschoolhasalwaysbeenthedeansofthecolleges.In1960,theschoolappointedFranklinDavidMurphyastheprincipal,usheringinaneraoftremendousgrowthinschoolfacilitiesandthequalityofteachers.Bytheendofthenineties,UCLAhadachievedvarioushonorsinawiderangeofdisciplines.ThiseraalsoestablishedUCLA'sownstatus,makingitnolongerjustanordinarybranchschoolintheUniversityofCaliforniasystem.TheepisodedescribedbyPresidentMurphyalsoprovedthischangeatUCLA:

"Icalledtheschoolfromanotherplace,andtheoperatorsaid:'UniversityofCalifornia.'Isaid:"IsitBerkeley?"Shesaid,"No."Isaid,"Well,wheredidmycallgo?"UCLA."Shesaid.Isaid,"Thenwhydon'tyoujusttalkaboutUCLA?``Oh,'shesaid,'thesuperiorinstructedustosaytheUniversityofCalifornia.'SothenextmorningIwenttotheofficeoftheUniversityofCaliforniasystemandwroteanote;Isaid:'Pleasere-instructouroperators,Startingatnoontoday,letthemanswerthephoneandsay,'ThisisUCLA.'Theysaid,'Youknowtheydon'tdothisatBerkeley.'Isaid,'Well,let'stry.Evenwithouttheirpermission,Weshouldstillbeabletodosomething.'"

UCLAhasmadesignificantdevelopmentsinthe25yearsafterWorldWarII,buildingalargenumberofschoolbuildingsandincreasingthenumberofstudents.UCLAhasatotalof163buildings,coveringanareaof​​419acres,with109academicdepartments,12professionalcolleges,and800researchinstitutions.Thereare29,633undergraduatestudents,12,212graduatestudents,and3,800full-timeteachers.

OnJanuary26,2011,MeyerRuskinandReneeRuskindonated100millionUSdollarstotheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles.OnFebruary14,2011,theUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngelesreceivedadonationofUS$200millionfromtheLindsayFoundation.ThesedonationswereusedtoestablishtheDreamFund,whichrepresented"thesupportofthecommunityforthedevelopmentofUCLAmedicalresearchandacademiccourses.".
