HuangXianpan(November13,1899-January18,1982),aninternationallyrenownedethnologistandhistory"Scientist,educator"(Note1)andsocialactivist.FormerlyknownasGanJinying,Zhuangnationality,ancestralhomeinFusuiCounty,Guangxi.In1922,hewasadmittedtoGuangxiProvincialThirdNormalSchool.In1926,hewasadmittedtoBeijingNormalUniversityandwastaughtbyChenYuan,QianXuanandthesamefamousteachers,studiedpre-classes,thisclass,andgraduateschoolfornineyears.In1935,hestudiedattheGraduateSchoolofTokyoImperialUniversity(nowTokyoUniversity),andhistutorswereJapaneseOrientalHistoryMastersKiyoshiWadaandShigeKato.DuringhisstudyabroadAccordingtotheintroductionofhismentor,ProfessorShurenHarada,ImetGuoMoruo,aChinesescholarwhowasstillinJapanatthetime,andheoftenexchangedtheoriesandbenefitedfromeachother.
AfterreturningfromJapaninNovember1937,heservedinGuangxiUniversity,ProfessorofhistoryatSunYat-senUniversity,NationalGuilinNormalUniversity,GuangxiNormalUniversity(nowGuangxiNormalUniversity),and“thefirstuniversityprofessorofZhuangnationality”inChina.(Note2)HeservedconcurrentlyasaresearcheratGuangxiInstituteofEducation,DirectorofGuangxiUniversity,ChineseDepartmenthead,librarycurator,librarycuratorofGuangxiNormalUniversity,etc.DuringtheAnti-JapaneseWar,hewasinvitedtoserveasamemberoftheeditorialboardof"NationalDefenseWeekly"andpublishedmanyanti-Japanesearticles.WhileteachingatGuangxiUniversityandSunYat-senUniversity,August1943Organizedthe"Guizhou-GuangxiBorderAreaInvestigationGroup"andservedasitsleader;inApril1945,the"QiannanBorderResidentsInvestigationGroup"wasorganizedandservedasitshead.Oneofthepioneersofmodernfieldinvestigationofethnicminorities.InJune1951,heservedasthedeputyheadoftheGuangxibranchoftheCentral-SouthernDelegationoftheCentralEthnicGroup(HeadofFeiXiaotong),andwenttotheminorityareasofGuangxiforcondolencesandinvestigation.March1952,ledTheassistantwenttoDu'an,Donglan,andNandantoinvestigate;inJune1953,heestablishedthe"HistoricalandCulturalRelicsInvestigationWorkingGroupoftheCultureandEducationBureauofthePeople'sGovernmentofGuixiTongAutonomousRegion"atGuangxiUniversity.,Tian'e,Hechi,Luocheng,Xinchengandotherplaces,successivelyvisitedandinvestigatedtheYao,Maonan,Miao,Zhuang,Mulaoandotherethnicminorities,andcollectedalargenumberofculturalrelicsandhistoricalmaterials.InAugust1956,participatedintheformationof"GuangxiEthnicMinoritySocialHistoryInvestigationTeam",servedasdeputyteamleaderandteamleaderoftheZhuangethnicgroup,actuallyresponsiblefortheacademicinvestigationofthewholegroup,leadingCarriedoutthefirstlarge-scale,comprehensiveandin-depthinvestigationofthehistoryandtraditionalcultureofethnicminoritiesinGuangxi,collectingalargenumberofprecioushistoricalmaterials,layingthefoundationforthecomprehensiveandin-depthstudyofZhuangsociety,historyandculture,andfortheGuangxiInstituteofNationalitiesTheestablishmentofandthelaterdevelopmentofZhuangstudiescreatedconditions.Inthe“threestagesofethnicidentification”afterthefoundingofNewChina,FeiXiaotong,HuangXianpan,XiaKangnong...andotherfamousChineseanthropologistsandethnologistsinthe20thcentury.Alargenumberofscholarsandethnicworkershavemadeoutstandingcontributions.Basedontheresearchresultsofthenationalethnicidentificationwork,theStateCouncilhassuccessivelyannouncedthatthereare55ethnicminoritiesinChina,plusatotalof56ethnicgroupsinChina.ThedeterminationofethniccompositionthroughscientificresearchandethnicvoluntaryprincipleshasbecomeapioneeringworkinethnicresearchinChina.Ithasalsoattractedwideattentionfromtheinternationalethnologicalcommunityandreceivedhighpraise."(Note3)
AfterthefoundingofNewChinain1949,HuangXianfan,astheonlyrepresentativeofGuangxi’sculturalandeducationalcircles,waselectedasthefirstChinaCouncilMemberofthePeople'sAssociationforForeignCultures(laterrenamedtheChinesePeople'sAssociationforFriendshipwithForeignCountries),(Note4)After1954,hewassuccessivelyelectedasarepresentativeoftheFirstNationalPeople'sCongress,amemberoftheNationalityCommitteeoftheNationalPeople'sCongress,andamemberoftheCentralCommitteeforForeignCultureLiaison.HewassuccessivelyappointedasamemberofthePeople'sGovernmentoftheGuixiTongAutonomousRegionandamemberofthePeople'sCommitteeofGuangxiProvincebytheCentralPeople'sGovernment.InJuly1957,heattendedthe"NationalEthnicWorkSymposium"heldbytheNationalPeople'sCongressNationalityCommitteeinQingdao.
OnFebruary1,1958,theFifthSessionoftheFirstNationalPeople’sCongressmadearesolution,"todismissXiaotong,HuangXianfan,andOuBaichuanasamemberoftheNationalPeople’sCongressNationalPeople’sCongress."(Note5)Asaresult,hewaswronglyclassifiedasthenumberonebigrightistinChinesehistory.
In1979,aftertheright-winginjusticeswerecompletelyrehabilitated,HuangXianfanwassuccessivelyelectedastheconsultantofthefirstChineseSocietyofEthnology(laterrenamedtheChineseSocietyofEthnology),(Note6)"EncyclopediaofChina·Memberoftheeditorialcommitteeof"Nationalities",consultantofthe1stSouthwesternEthnicStudiesAssociationofChina,ViceChairmanofthe1stand2ndChinaBaiyueEthnicHistoryResearchAssociation,andmemberoftheFifthNationalCommitteeoftheChinesePeople'sPoliticalConsultativeConference.DuringhistenureasamemberoftheNationalCommitteeoftheChinesePeople'sPoliticalConsultativeConference,hedidalotofworktoassistthegovernmentinrehabilitatingunjust,falseandwrongcases.
