MaXu,thewordJize,theyearofbirthanddeathisunknown,anativeofFufengMaoling(nownortheastofXingping,Shaanxi),thegrandnephewofGeneralFuboMaYuan,willbetheseventhsonofmasterMaYan,afamousclassicscholarTheyoungerbrotherofMaRong,ageneralintheHanDynastyandtheEasternHanDynasty.

Thebackgroundofcreation
Since"HistoricalRecords"wasonlywrittenintheearlyyearsofEmperorWuoftheHanDynasty,manypeoplewrotesequelsforitatthattime.Accordingtothe"ShiTongZhengYi"record,therearemorethanadozenpeoplewhohavewrittenthesequelto"HistoricalRecords",includingLiuXiang,LiuXin,FengShang,andYangXiong.Thetitleofthebookisstillcalled"HistoricalRecords."BanGu'sfather,BanBiao(AD3-AD54),wasverydissatisfiedwiththesesequels,sohe"takestheoldthingsandreadsfromthem"as"HistoricalRecords"and"makestheSixty-five"HouChuan".AfterthedeathofBanBiao,BanGu,whowasonly22yearsold,begantosortouthisfather'smanuscripts,determinedtoinherithisfather'sbusinessandcompletethissuccessionmasterpiece.
Formationprocess
Inthefirstfewyearsofwork,someonewrotetoEmperorMingEmperorofHanMingandreportedthatBanGuwas"privatelywritingahistoryofthecountry."BanGuwasarrestedandimprisoned,andallmanuscriptswereconfiscated.Hisyoungerbrother,BanChao,wrotetoEmperorHanMingandexplainedthatthepurposeofBanGuxiu's"HanShu"wastopraiseHanandsothatfuturegenerationscouldunderstandhistoryandlearnlessonsfromit,withoutslanderingtheimperialcourt.Later,BanGuwasacquittedandEmperorHanMinggavetheBanfamilysomemoneytohelpthemwriteitdown.
TheEmperorofHanMingappreciatedBanGu'stalents,andwascalledLantaiLingshi.Atthattime,LantaiLingshiFuyiwashiscolleague.Bothofthemwerewell-knownfortheirliterature.BanGuandhisyoungerbrotherBanchaosaid:"WuZhongcanbelongtoliterature,andforLantaiLingshi,hecan'trestonhisownwhenhewrites."Allusions.BanGuwasalsoorderedtocompletethebookwrittenbyhisfather.

BanGu'sbook"HanShu"wasnotcompletedanddied.TheEmperorofHanHeorderedhissisterBanZhaotocontinuetowriteBanGu'sposthumousworkbasedonthedatastoredintheDongguanCollectionPavilion.However,whentheeighttableswerecompleted,BanZhaodied.MaXufromthesamecountywasadiscipleofBanZhao,andhewascalledbytheHanandEmperorstomakeuptheremaining"AstronomicalChronicles".
