ThediscussionaboutthecreationofaninstitutionofhigherlearninginNewYorkProvincebeganin1704.However,itwasnotuntilthefoundingofPrincetonUniversityinNewJerseyacrosstheHudsonRiverthattheideaofcreatinganewcollegeinNewYorkCitywastakenseriously.In1746,adecreetoraisefundsforthenewcollegewaspassedbytheNewYorkProvincialAssembly.In1751,theNewYorkProvincialAssemblyformedaten-membercommitteeincludingsevenmembersoftheChurchofEngland.Thecommittee’sresponsibilitywastoguidetheestablishmentofthisnewcollege.Thefundsneededforitsestablishmentcamefromtheissuanceofthestatelottery.FundingApril.
TheschoolofficiallyopenedinJuly1754,andthefirstprincipalwasSamuelJohnson,DoctorofTheology.Dr.Johnsonwasalsotheonlymentortothefirsteightstudentsofthecollege.LecturesareheldinthenewschoolbuildingnexttoTrinityChurchonLowerBroadwayinManhattan.Subsequently,thefirsthighereducationinstitutionestablishedinNewYorkState,thefifthuniversityintheUnitedStates,wasformallyestablishedonOctober31,1754underthenameofKingGeorgeII’sRoyalCharter.ForKing’sCollege,theAmericanWarofIndependencethatbrokeoutin1776wasacatastrophicevent.Theschool’steachingactivitiesweresuspendedforeightyearssincetheContinentalArmyenteredNewYorkin1776,includingtheentireperiodofNewYork’smilitaryoccupationbytheBritish,untiltheofficialwithdrawaloftheBritishfromNewYorkin1783.Theschoollibrarywaslooted,andtheonlybuildingwasfirstusedbytheContinentalArmyandthenusedasamilitaryhospitalbytheBritisharmy.Aftertheschoolwasoccupiedbyrevolutionaries,theschool’sroyalsupporterswereforcedtoleaveKing’sCollege.
ColumbiaCollege(1784-1896)
AftertheAmericanRevolution,thecollegesoughtsupportfromtheStateofNewYorkforitsreconstruction.Forthisreason,theconstitutionofthecollegeTherequirementsformodificationareguaranteed.Thestatelegislatureapprovedtheproposaltosupportthecollege.AschoolboardwasestablishedonMay1,1784tooverseethereconstructionofKing’sCollege.InordertoshowsupportforthenewrepublicoftheUnitedStates,thestatelegislaturestipulatedinthebillthat"thecollegelocatedinNewYorkCityandpreviouslyknownasKing'sCollegewillalwaysbecalledColumbiaCollegefromnowon."In1787,theschooldirectorsfinallyrealizedtheflawsintheschool'sconstitution.InFebruary1787,theyestablishedaconstitutionamendmentcommitteeledbyJohnJayandAlexanderHamilton.InAprilofthesameyear,theschoolformallyadoptedanewcharterthatempowerstwenty-fourschooldirectors,andithasbeeninuseeversince.
OnMay21,1787,WilliamSamuelJohnson,sonofSamuelJohnson,wasunanimouslyelectedpresidentofColumbiaCollege.Beforeservinginthecollege,JohnsonparticipatedinthefirstContinentalCongressandwaselectedastherepresentativeoftheConstitutionalAssemblyoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Foraperiodoftimeinthe1890s,becauseofthedualidentitiesoftheNewYorkStateCapitalandtheNewYorkStateCapital,andthesuccessiveadministrationsofFederalistgovernments,therevitalizedColumbiaCollegethrivedunderthefundingofFederalistssuchasHamiltonandJay.growingup.OnMay6,1789,PresidentGeorgeWashingtonandVicePresidentJohnAdamsattendedthegraduationceremonyofColumbiaCollegetohonorthosealumniwhoparticipatedintheAmericanRevolution.
ColumbiaUniversity(1896-present)
In1896,theschooldirectorsformallydecidedtouse"ColumbiaUniversity"asthenewnameoftheschool.Atthesametime,theprincipalSethLowmovedthecampusagain.Thistimethecampuswastransferredfrom49thStreettoitscurrentaddress:awidercampusintherapidlygrowingMorningsideHeights.UndertheworkofLow’ssuccessorNicholasMurrayButlerformorethanfortyyears,ColumbiaUniversityhasquicklybecomeanimportantresearchinstitutionintheUnitedStates,settingupamodelof"comprehensiveuniversity"forlateruniversities.Becauseofthecompletionofthefirstnuclearreactor,andthestartoftheManhattanProject,whichwasbroughtaboutbyColumbiaUniversityteachersJohnRayDunning,IsidoreIsaacRabbi,EnricoFermi,andPolycarp·Kusch’sresearchonatomsputtheColumbiaUniversityDepartmentofPhysicsunderthespotlightoftheworldinthe1940s.

ColumbiaUniversitySchoolofMedicine,whichwasfirstpartofKing’sCollege(nowColumbiaUniversity)Part.Thismedicalschoolwasthefirstmedicalschoolestablishedinthefirst13statesoftheUnitedStates.Sincethen,theUnitedStateshasobtainedadoctorofmedicinedegree.Since1993,ithasalsobeenthefirstmedicalschoolintheUnitedStatestoholda"WhiteCoatCeremony"(WhiteCoatCeremony).

CollegeofEngineering
ThethirdengineeringcollegeinAmericanhistoryandthesecondoldestengineeringcollegeinNewYorkState.InOctober1997,themysteriousChinesebusinessmanZ.Y.FUdonatedUS$26milliontothecollege,sothecollegewasrenamedTheFuFoundationSchoolofEngineeringandAppliedScience.Thecollege'smajorsinappliedmathematics,biomedicalengineering,andcomputerscienceareconsideredtobeoneofthebestintheUnitedStates.TheMasterofFinancialEngineeringprogramisrecognizedasthetopthreeintheworld.Thecollegewillalsocultivatetheliberalartsbackgroundoffutureengineeringstudentsasoneofitscorecontents.Thecollegecurrentlyhas173professors,including27academiciansoftheAmericanAcademyofEngineeringand1NobelPrizewinner.Amongtheteachersandalumniofthecollege,atotalof10NobelPrizewinnerswereborn.SEASCollege'sadmissionrateforundergraduatesin2015was9.9%,makingitsecondonlytoMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,anditisalsothemostdifficultcollegeintheIvyLeagueChinaInstituteofTechnology.

CollegeUniversityJournalismSchoolistheworld’snumberonejournalismschool,theonlyjournalismschoolintheIvyLeague,andoneoftheoldestjournalismschoolsintheUnitedStatesandtheworld.JosephPulitzerwasfoundedin1912.Thecollegeoffers5degreeprograms(DegreePrograms),namely:MS(MasterofScienceinJournalism),MSinDataJournalism(MasterofScienceinDataJournalism),MA(MasterofArtsinJournalism),Ph.D.inCommunication(Ph.D.inCommunication),AndDualDegreePrograms.Inaddition,theSchoolofJournalismisalsoresponsibleforthemanagementofmultipleawards,includingthePulitzerPrizeandtheDuPont-ColumbiaPrize,co-hostingtheNationalMagazineAwards,andpublishingColumbiaNewsReview.
In1892,PulitzerdonatedfundstothethenpresidentofColumbia,hopingtoestablishtheworld'sfirstcollegeinthepress.Theschoolinitiallyrejectedthemoney.Thesuccessortotheprincipalwasveryhappytoacceptsuchaplan,butittookalotoftimetowaituntilthe$2milliondonationprovidedbyPulitzerwasactuallyusedandusedtobuildajournalismschool.WhentheclassstartedonSeptember30,1912,about100undergraduatesandpostgraduatesfrom21countrieswerestudyinghere.In1935,DeanCarlAckermanledthetransformationofthecollegeintothefirstgraduateschoolofjournalismintheUnitedStates.ThestudentsdigupnewsmaterialsinNewYorkCityduringthedayandreturntotheSchoolofJournalismtodraftarticlesintheevening.

GraduateSchoolofArts&Sciences
TheGraduateSchoolofArts&SciencesisoneofthemostoutstandinggraduateschoolsintheUnitedStates.Thecollegebegantotakeshapeinthelate19thcentury.Thecollegehasmorethanonehundredmajorsinmathematics,physics,chemistry,history,arthistoryandarchaeology,astronomy,atmosphericandplanetarysciences.Thephysicsmajorisoneofthemostoutstandingmajors.Foronehundredyears,33NobelPrizewinnersinphysicshavestudiedandworkedhere,including11doctoralstudents.FamousphysicistsFermi,Planck,Rabbi,WuJianxiong,andLiZhengdaohavealltaughtandresearchedhere.ThecurrentNobelPrizeprofessorsareLiZhengdaoandH.Stomer.ThefamousManhattanProjectwasbornhere.TheAmericanPhysicalSocietywasalsoestablishedhere.
SchoolofInternationalandPublicAffairs
Oneofthemostprestigiousschoolsofinternationalrelationsintheworld,withmorethan18,000alumniinmorethan150countries,includingheadsofstate,businessleaders,Journalists,diplomats,membersofCongress,membersofthegovernmentcabinet,etc.Withmorethan70full-timeprofessorsandmorethan200part-timeprofessors,studentscanadvanceacademicallyandpracticallyundertheguidanceoftopscholarsandpractitionersintheworld'sinternationalandpublicfields.

OrTeachers'College(Teachers'College),istheworld'stopgraduateschoolofeducation.Dewey,amasterofeducationandthefatherofAmericanphilosophy,taughthere.ThelibraryoftheCollegeofEducationistheworld'slargesteducationalacademiclibrary.Thecollegeisalsothebirthplaceoftheeducationaldoctoraltrainingsystem,thebehavioralpsychologyschool,andthepositivistphilosophy.Thefamoushappybirthdaysongandtheyellowschoolbusalsooriginatedhere.ThehistoryofthefoundinganddevelopmentoftheTeachersCollegeofColumbiaUniversity,tosomeextent,representsthehistoryofthedevelopmentofAmericanteachereducation.TheTeachersCollegewasfoundedin1887toprovideanewtrainingmethodforteachersofpoorstudentsinNewYorkCityatthattime.TheschoolwasoriginallynamedNewYorkTeacherTrainingSchool.By1892,thecollegewasofficiallyrenamedtheTeachersCollegeandisstillinusetoday.ItwasmergedintoColumbiaUniversityin1898andbecameoneofitsfouraffiliatedcolleges.Atthebeginningoftheestablishmentofthecollege,thefoundersputforwardaviewthatiscompletelydifferentfromthatofmoderneducationalthoughts.Basedontheintegrationofhumanitarianconceptsandscientificmethods,thefoundersoftheschoolbelievethatsuccessfulteachingnotonlyreliesonprofessionalteachers’proficiencyintextbooks,teachingmethodsandprofessionalknowledge,butalsorequiresprofessionalteacherstounderstandunderwhatcircumstancesstudentscanperformthemosteffectiveLearn.

Internationalizationanddiversification
Asaworld-renowneduniversity,internationalizationandmulticulturalintegrationhavealwaysbeenanimportantstrategyfortheschool’ssustainableandhigh-qualitydevelopmentone.First,thecollegeactivelyadvocatestheinternationalizationofthefaculty.Ontheonehand,itactivelyrecruitsteacherswithinternationalbackgroundstoenrichthe"ecologicaldiversity"ofthefaculty.Thisisreflectedinthefactthatmostofthecurrentteachershaveoverseasresearch,teaching,andvisits.Ortheexperienceofleadinginternationaleducationresearchprojects,aconsiderablenumberofteacherswerebornoverseasorobtaineddoctoraldegreesfromoverseasuniversities.Ontheotherhand,thecollegeactivelywelcomeswell-knownprofessorsfromthehomecountryandothercountriesandregionstocometogivelecturesandcooperateinresearchtoenrichandexpandthecollege'steachingandresearchfields.

哥大校长Bollinger倡导成立于2003年的世界领导人论坛,为哥大提供了机会,听取世界各国领导人及政治家、经济学家在政治、工业、金融、和学术等方面的见解。
