1999(November13)markedthe100thanniversaryofthebirthofProfessorHuangXianfan,thelatefamoushistorianandmasterofZhuangStudiesinChina.Asoneofhiscommemorativeactivities,"APreliminaryExplorationoftheInterpretationofAncientBooks-SelectedAcademicEssaysbyHuangXianfan"waseditedandpublished.Itwillundoubtedlybeaverymeaningfulthing.Thecomradesintheeditingteamofthisbookaskedmetowriteaprefacetothebook.Originally,Iwasnotgoodatliterarywords,butoutofadversity,Iwaspragmaticandoutspoken.Inadversity,Iwasstillloyaltothenationalculturalundertakings.Ifeelhonoredandobligatory.
LaoHuangwasborninapoorpeasantfamilyinZhuangTownship,SouthwestChina.Hisroadtostudywasquitetortuous,andhislifejourneywasquitebumpy.Forthisreason,heformedtheextraordinarypersonalityofhistenaciousstruggleandunreturnedlifeandtheloftybeliefofdiligenceandcourage.HestudiedatBeijingNormalUniversityinhisearlyyearsandstudiedfornineyears.Aftergraduation,hewenttoTokyoImperialUniversityResearchInstitutefortwoyearstostudy.Hewasoncefortunatetoberigorouslyeducatedandacademicallyinfluencedbymanyhistoriansatfamousuniversitiesathomeandabroad.Strongandsolidhistoricalfoundation.Thiskindofself-improvementspiritanddeepacademicfoundationaretwoimportantconditionsforHuangLaotomakegreatercontributionstothenationalculturalundertakingsinthefuture.

AcademiccirclesgenerallybelievethatthefirstappearanceofChineseethnographyinthemodernsense,basedonfieldinvestigationsandresearch,mostlybeganinthethirtiesofthe20thcentury,whenethnologicalresearchwasflourishingbeforethefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChina.1940s.InGuangxi,LiuXifan's"LingbiaoJiman"(1934,CommercialPress)isamasterpiece."LingbiaoJiman"isbasedonfieldsurveysinethnicminorityareas.Inthebook,theauthortreatsethnicminoritiesandHannationalitiesasequalsandtreatsthemasequals.Itbreaksawayfromthetraditional"LocalChronicles"ethnichistoryview.Itcanbesaidtobeofgreatimportance.Significantresearchresults."ABriefHistoryoftheZhuangNationalityinGuangxi"isbasedonawealthoffieldinvestigationsandrigorousandmeticulousliteratureresearchfromtheperspectiveoftheZhuangpeopleunderthebackgroundthatthegovernmentimplementedtheethnicequalitypolicyafterthefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChinaandtheGuangxiZhuangAutonomousRegionisabouttobeestablished.Asaresult,ahistoryofresistanceagainstvariousdiscriminationandoppressionoftheZhuangnationalityhasbeencompiledsinceancienttimes.InadditiontothemainnarrationofthepoliticalandsocialinequalitythattheZhuangpeoplehavebeenplacedbythefeudalrulingdynastyinhistoryandthemanyunyieldingresistancesmadebytheZhuangpeopletothis,theauthoralsoarguesthattheZhuangpeoplehavemaintainedtheiroriginalstatusinthousandsofyearsofhistory.Atthesametimeasthenationaltradition,whileabsorbingtheadvancedcultureoftheHannationality,itgraduallyformedtheinherentexcellentcultureofthenation.Thesepropositionsaresooriginalthattheyhaveattractedtheattentionofacademia.Thisnotonlymakes"ABriefHistoryofChildreninGuangxi"anepoch-makingmilestoneinthehistoryofZhuangstudies.Atthesametime,throughhisbook,onecanalsogetaglimpseofProfessorHuang'sloveanddeepaffectionfortheZhuangpeople.TheauthorhasbeenengagedinZhuangnationalityresearchformorethan20years.BeforeChina'sreformandopeningup,itwasextremelydifficultforforeignerstocometoChinatoconductfieldinvestigationsandresearchintheminorityareas.Moreover,manyoutstandingresearchresultsofChineseethnicscholarsbeforethereformandopeningupweremostlypublishedintheformofinternaldistribution(forexample,HuangXianfan’sposthumouswork"NongZhigao"wasprintedontheinsidepagewhenitwaspublishedbyGuangxiPeople’sPublishingHouseinOctober1983.Thereis"internaldistribution"-editor'snote).ThisinturnmakesitmoredifficultforoverseasscholarstoobtainmaterialswhenstudyingChinesenationalhistoryindepth.TheauthorfirststartedtostudyProfessorHuang,Irememberitwasafter1985.Atthattime,ProfessorHuanghadpassedawayandhadnochancetoreceiveinstruction.ButwhenIcarefullystudiedthe"ABriefHistoryoftheZhuangPeopleinGuangxi"andotherworkswrittenbyProfessorHuang,IwasshockedbytheexistenceofsuchanoutstandinghistorianinGuangxi’sacademiccircles.Aftertheresearch,IlearnedthatProfessorHuangwasdeeplyimpressedwhenhehadbeenresponsibleforguidingtheethnologycommunityforalongtimeafterthefoundingofNewChina,andhismemoryisstillfresh.
Recently,Mr.WuWeifeng,thedeputycuratoroftheGuangxiZhuangAutonomousRegionMuseum,wasabletogettoknowProfessorHuang’ssonGanWenjie.Frommutualexchanges,helearnedaboutProfessorHuang’stortuouslifeandnoblepersonality,whichgaveProfessorHuangachanceHisadmirationisincreasingdaybyday.Furthermore,ProfessorHuangstudiedabroadatTokyoImperialUniversityinJapanintheearlydays,andestablishedhisownsolidacademicresearchfoundationwithhisadvancedstudiesofOrientalHistory(ChineseHistory)anditsin-depthresearchmethods.ThisshowsthatProfessorHuangplayedanimportantroleinthehistoryofacademicexchangesbetweenChinaandJapan.Fromthispointofview,ProfessorHuangisliketheteachernexttome.
Onthe100thanniversaryofProfessorHuang’sbirth,itisundoubtedlyofgreatsignificancefortheyoungergenerationofscholarstoorganizethepapersandmanuscriptspublishedbyProfessorHuangduringhislifetimeintothisbook.Manyoftheessaysreceivedinthisbookarestillrare,anditcanbesaidtobethebestacademicworktounderstandthegeneraloverviewofProfessorHuang'sacademicresearchinhislife.SomeofthemarepapersonthesocialhistoryofTang,Song,andYuanpublishedinthe1930sbeforetheSecondWorldWar,somearepapersonthesocialhistoryofancientChinapublishedduringthewar,andsomearerelatedtothesocialhistoryofthePeople’sRepublicofChinaafterthefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChina.TheNongZhigaoUprisingandthepapersonthesocialdevelopmentoftheZhuangnationality,thesepapershavehadasignificantimpactontheacademiccircle.
Iamconvincedthatthroughthesetwoimportantacademicworks,"ABriefHistoryofGuangxiChildren'sClan"and"APreliminaryExplorationoftheInterpretationofAncientBooks:SelectedAcademicPapersbyHuangXianfan",itwillinevitablyleadtoMoreresearchershaveamorecomprehensiveunderstandingofthepracticalsignificanceofresearchingProfessorHuangXianfan,andamorein-depthevaluationofProfessorHuang’suniquecontributiontopioneeringZhuangstudies,thusbecomingadrivingforceandguideforlatergenerationsofscholarstoengageinethnologicalresearch.Finally,IhopethatthepublicationofthebookcanplayaroleineffectivelypromotingthedevelopmentofGuangxiethnologyresearch.Itisfortheorder.
