ThepredecessorofTianjinUniversity,BeiyangUniversity,wasfoundedaftertheSino-JapaneseSino-JapaneseWarofSino-JapaneseWar.DuringtheSino-JapaneseWarof1894-1895,thewholecountrywasstrong.ShengXuanhuai,arepresentativeoftheWesternizationMovementIndustryfaction,realizedthat“thefirsttobecomemoreself-reliantliesinthetalents,andthetalentsmustfirststartschool”.AfterShengXuanhuaitookofficeinTianjinCustomsRoadin1892,hebeganpreparationsforschool.OnOctober2nd,1895,EmperorGuangxu'simperialpenapprovedtheestablishmentofTianjinBeiyangSchoolofWesternStudies,withShengXuanhuaiasthefirstsupervisor.In1896,BeiyangWesternSchoolwasofficiallyrenamedBeiyangSchool.
In1899,thefirststudentofTianjinBeiyangSchoolgraduated.InJanuary1900,theschoolawardedthefirstuniversitydiplomainChinesehistory.Duetothebestresults,HongKongstudentWangChonghuibecamethewinnerofthe"QinZiNo.1"diploma.
PeiyangUniversityHallrunsschoolsinaccordancewiththemodernAmericanmodel,fullyintroducesWesterneducationmodels,andestablishesarelativelycompleteeducationandteachingmanagementsystem.Thefirst-classschool(undergraduate)andthesecond-classschool(preparatorycourse)havebeenestablished.Eachisfouryears.Thefirst-classschoolsetupfourspecialties(thatis,departments):engineering,mining,machinery,andlawandregulations.In1897,theschooladdedarailwayprofessionalschool,andin1898,arailwayschoolwasestablished.Requirement,whichembodiesthefoundingpurposeofPeiyangUniversity"Prosperinglearningtosavethecountry".
In1900,theEight-PowerAlliedForcesinvadedTianjinandBeijing.Theschoolbuildingswereoccupiedbyenemysoldiers.Theequipmentanddocumentsweredestroyedandtheschoolwasforcedtoclose.InApril1903,theschoolofficiallyresumedclassesinXiguWuku,Tianjin(nowtheEastCampusoftheHongqiaoCampusofHebeiUniversityofTechnology);inthesameyear,thefirstbatchofgraduatesfromPeiyangUniversitystudiedintheUnitedStates.
WhenPeiyangUniversitystartedandresumedclassesin1903,threesubjectsoflaw,civilengineering,andminingandmetallurgyweresetup.Later,inresponsetodiplomaticneeds,alanguageclassandaRussianlanguageclasswereattached.In1907,anormalschoolwasopened.Sofar,PeiyangUniversityIthasbecomeacomprehensivenewuniversitythatincludesliberalarts,law,engineering,andnormaleducation.In1910,PeiyangUniversitystudentFengXiminwonthefirstplaceinthepalaceexamination.
Specializedengineeringperiod
InJanuary1912,theBeiyangSchoolwasrenamedPeiyangUniversity,DirectlyundertheMinistryofEducationoftheRepublicofChina,andin1913wasorderedtochangeitsnametotheNationalBeiyangUniversity.In1915,theprincipalZhaoTianlinpromulgatedtheschoolmotto:"Seektruthfromfacts".

In1917,theMinistryofEducationoftheNationalGovernmentcarriedouttheinvestigationofPekingUniversityandPekingUniversity.Departmentswereadjusted,PeiyangUniversitywaschangedtospecializeinengineering,thelawdepartmentwasmovedtoPekingUniversity,andtheengineeringdepartmentofPekingUniversitywasmovedtoPekingUniversity.Sincethen,BeiyangUniversityhasenteredtheeraofspecializedengineering.
In1928,PeiyangUniversitywasrenamed"NationalPekingUniversitySecondCollegeofEngineering".Soontheuniversitydistrictsystemwasabolished,andPeiyangUniversitywastemporarilycalled"NationalPeiyangInstituteofTechnology".PeiyangInstituteofTechnologybegantoestablisharesearchinstitutein1933.In1934,itsorganizationchartwasapprovedbytheMinistryofEducation.Inearly1935,itbegantorecruitgraduatestudents.ThefirstgraduatestudentsgraduatedbeforetheJuly7thIncidentin1937andwereawardedamaster'sdegree.

OnJuly7,1937,theJapaneseinvadingarmylaunchedafull-scalewarofaggressionagainstChina.OnJuly30,Tianjinfell.OnSeptember10,theMinistryofEducationorderedtheestablishmentofXi’anProvisionalUniversitywithPekingUniversity,PekingNormalUniversity,BeiyangInstituteofTechnologyandPekingResearchInstituteasthebackbone.InMarch1938,Xi'anProvisionalUniversitywasrenamedtheNationalNorthwestAssociatedUniversity.InJuly,theMinistryofEducationinstructedNorthwestUnitedUniversitytobereorganizedintoNorthwestUniversity,NorthwestInstituteofTechnology,NorthwestNormalUniversityandNorthwestMedicalCollege.NationalNorthwestInstituteofTechnology(alsoknownasNationalNorthwestUnitedUniversityCollegeofEngineering)iscomposedofBeiyangInstituteofTechnology(ieTianjinUniversity),PekingUniversityInstituteofTechnology,JiaozuoInstituteofTechnology(ChinaUniversityofMiningandTechnology),NortheasternUniversityInstituteofTechnology(ieNortheasternUniversity)Combined,thecollegeislocatedinGuluba,ChengguCounty,Shaanxi.

InOctober1941,thePeiyangalumniofeachtermdiscussedtheresumptionoftheschoolanddecidedtocallfortherestorationoftheNationalPeiyangInstituteofTechnology.Atthesametime,aprivateBeiyangInstituteofTechnologywasestablished,jointlyorganizedbyBeiyangalumniacrossthecountry.Underthispressure,theExecutiveYuanoftheNationalistGovernmentupgradedtheformerZhejiangProvincialInshiUniversitytotheNationalInshiUniversityinDecember1942,andseparateditsengineeringcollegeastheNationalBeiyangInstituteofTechnology.ChenXunminwasappointedastheactingdean.LocatedinTaishun,Zhejiang,itwascalled"TaishunBeiyangInstituteofTechnology"inhistory.Atthesametime,LiShutianestablishedtheXijingBranchofBeiyangInstituteofTechnologyinXi'aninthespringof1944,withtwodepartmentsofcivilengineeringandwaterconservancyengineering,andpresidedovertheXijingBranchwiththespiritofBeiyangscholarship.Theperiodofintegrationofscienceandengineering
InAugust1945,TianjinwasregainedafterthevictoryoftheAnti-JapaneseWar.Alargenumberofteachers,studentsandalumniofPeiyangputforwardastrongrequestfortherestorationofPeiyangNationalUniversity.Inearly1946,theMinistryofEducationformallyorderedtherestorationoftheNationalPeiyangUniversity,focusingonresumingtheoriginalsiteofPeiyangUniversityinXigu,Tianjin.Sincethen,teachersandstudentsfromthefourschoolsofTaishunBeiyangInstituteofTechnology,BeiyangInstituteofTechnologyXijingBranch,NorthwestInstituteofTechnologyandBeipingDepartmenthavereturnedtoTianjintoparticipateintheresumptionofschools.
OnOctober22,1945,PeiyangUniversityofficiallyreopenedandopenedtheSchoolofScience,andenteredtheperiodofintegrationofscienceandengineering.Afterresumingtheschool,PeiyangUniversity,withthepurposeof"researchingadvancedacademicsandcultivatingspecializedtalents",formulatedtheteachingpolicyof"Neverneglecttostudytheoriesandprinciples,andatthesametimepayattentiontotheapplicationofsciencetoorganicallyintegratescienceandengineering",andactivelyputitintopractice;Atthesametime,fiveengineeringresearchinstitutesincludingcivilengineering,waterconservancy,mining,metallurgyandchemicalengineeringwereestablishedtoactivelycarryoutacademicexchangesandscientificresearch,andbegantorecruitgraduatestudents.
Theperiodofbuildingamultidisciplinaryindustrialuniversity
InJanuary1949,Tianjinwasliberated.InApril,PeiyangUniversityofficiallyopenedandresumedclassesattheoriginalcampus.
SinceNovember1949,PeiyangUniversityhasbeenunderthedirectleadershipoftheCentralMinistryofEducation.Sincethen,BeiyangUniversityhascarriedoutaseriesofreformssuchasstrengtheningthefacultylineup,curriculumreform,andmanagementsystemreform.Afterthetransformation,PeiyangUniversityimplementsthreelevelsofmanagement:school,college,anddepartment.Theschoolhasestablishedaschoolofscienceandaschoolofengineering.
OnSeptember22,1951,BeiyangUniversitymergedwithHebeiInstituteofTechnologyandwasnamedTianjinUniversity.
Beforetheadjustmentofthedepartmentsofcollegesanduniversitiesacrossthecountryin1952,TianjinUniversityhad11departmentsincivilengineering,waterconservancy,mining,textiles,metallurgy,machinery,electricalengineering,chemicalengineering,geology,mathematics,andphysics.
In1952,thecollegesanduniversitiesinthecountrywerereorganized,NankaiUniversityEngineeringCollege,JinguUniversityEngineeringCollege,TsinghuaUniversity,PekingUniversity,YanjingUniversity,TangshanRailwayInstitute’sChemicalEngineeringDepartment,andthearchitectureofBeijingRailwayInstituteDepartmentofEngineeringandotherdepartmentsweremergedintoTianjinUniversity;DepartmentofMathematicsandPhysicsofTianjinUniversitymergedintoNankaiUniversity.Sincethen,otherdepartmentshavebeentransferredfromTianjinUniversity:

TheCulturalRevolutionbrokeoutin1966,andtheschool’snormalteachingandresearchworkwasgreatlyimpacted,whichaffectedthenormaldevelopmentoftheschool’scareer.Afterthenationwideresumptionoftheunifiedcollegeentranceexaminationin1977,TianjinUniversitycompletelysetasidechaos,rectifiedtheorderofteachingandresearch,andresumedenrollmentofpostgraduatesin1978.InFebruary1978,TianjinUniversityrestoreditsstatusasakeyuniversitydirectlyundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofEducationbeforetheCulturalRevolution.

In1978,TianjinUniversitysuccessivelyestablishedtheFirstBranch,SecondBranch,ThirdBranch,andFourthBranchofTiandaUniversity.Thelatterfourbranches(TianjinUniversityArchitectureBranch)becameTianjinUrbanConstructionCollege(nowTianjinUrbanConstructionUniversity),andthefirst,secondandthirdbranchesbecameTianjinInstituteofTechnology(nowTianjinUniversityofTechnology).In1979,TianjinUniversityputforwardthegoalofturningtheschoolintoacomprehensiveuniversitycombiningscienceandengineering,adjustingthesettingofdepartments,developingnewmajorscombiningscienceandengineering,andstrengtheningthebasictheoryandtechnicalfoundation.
InOctober1981,theStateCouncildecidedtoimplementadegreesysteminhighereducationinstitutionsandauthorizedTianjinUniversitytobethedegree-grantingunit;inthesameyear,itbegantorecruitthefirstbatchofdoctoralstudents.

InMay1995,TianjinUniversitypassedthepre-examinationofthenational"211Project"department;onOctober2,TianjinUniversityheldthe100thanniversaryofitsfounding.TianjinUniversityhasimplementedthereformofthecollegesystemsince1997.Ithasimplementedatwo-levelmanagementsystemofschoolandcollege,andorganizedtheoriginalschool-runningdepartmentsandinstitutesinto11colleges.Atthesametime,theschoolhasbeenexperimentingwithaplannedandguidedcreditsystemsince1985.Onthisbasis,theschoolhasadjusteditsprofessionalstructure,focusingontheintegrationofscienceandengineering,theinfiltrationofartsandsciences,andtheinterdisciplinaryandintegrationofdisciplines.

From2001to2013,35achievementsoftheschoolwonnationalscienceandtechnologyawards,3achievementswereselectedas"TopTenScientificandTechnologicalProgressinChineseUniversities",and415achievementswonprovincialandministerialscienceandtechnologyawards.
From2006to2010,TianjinUniversity’stotalfundingforscienceandtechnologyreached3.77billionyuan,doublingthatduringthe"TenthFive-YearPlan"period;anumberoflandmarkachievementshavebeenmade,and14achievementshavewonNationalScienceandTechnologyAwards.In2011,thetotalfundingforscienceandtechnologyintheschoolreached1.505billionyuan;in2012,thetotalfundingforscienceandtechnologywas1.808billionyuan.

校训
天津大学校训为“实事求是”,由建校初期北洋大学原校长、著名法学家赵天麟首倡。赵天麟任校长期间(1914-1920)总结北洋大学办学经验,概括出“实事求是”四个字,以之教导学生,遂成为校训。
“实事求是”一词出于《汉书·河间献王刘德传》,文中说刘德“修古好学,实事求是”。赵天麟以这四个字首倡于北洋大学。以实事求是的精神,对待科学技术知识,端正学风。
赵天麟坚持严字当头,以讲求高质量为教学目标。他在1925年北洋大学三十周年校庆祝词中写到:
形上形下,聚精会神。人文渊薮,日新又新。
猥长其曹,改制伊始。一得之愚,实事求是。
忆当髫稚,蛾术于斯。归自海外,乃辱皋比。
教学相承,渊源接续。从事此间,厥情最笃。
别来数稔,时复念兹。达材成德,与有荣施。
云霞蒸蔚,盛会欣逢。洋洋学海,万派朝宗。
这一段祝词是赵天麟办学思想的回顾和总结,体现了实事求是的精神,和集中精力从事教学工作,培养德才兼备的人才的抱负。
天津大学在继承这一优良校训的基础上赋予了新的内涵,即办事求学,要从实际出发,注重实效,诚实守信,并注重求索真相,开拓创新,把握规律。天津大学继承了北洋大学的优良校风和学风,恪守“实事求是”的校训。

天津大学以每年公历10月2日为校庆日。
校色
天津大学校色为“北洋蓝”(C100,M80,Y0,K30),代表理性、沉稳、效率、科技。
校徽
天津大学校徽于1990年确定,设计者为设计院郭泉。
校徽外形为圆形,取自《淮南子·主术训》“智圆行方”之意。校徽中间“1895”字样为天津大学(北洋大学)创建时间,盾形为原来北洋大学校徽的概括,二者说明了天津大学前身为北洋大学,是中国近代史上第一所大学。英文为“TIANJINUNIVERSITY(PEIYANGUNIVERSITY)”亦为天津大学(北洋大学)的英文翻译。校徽外为齿轮,象征天津大学是一所以工为主,理、工、文、管相结合的综合性大学。
校歌
《天津大学校歌》,又称北洋大学校歌,诞生于1935年,为纪念中国近代第一所大学,北洋大学建校40周年而谱写。校歌作者萧友梅、廖辅叔。校歌总结了北洋大学兴学育人、实业救国的历程,激发北洋学子的责任感与使命感,体现了学校的办学精神与优良传统。

每年四月,天津大学会启动“天大·海棠季”活动,举行校园开放日及海棠季系列活动,邀市民、各地游客入校赏海棠花。天津大学建筑群作为近现代重要史迹及代表性建筑于2013年1月10日正式获批成为天津市第四批文物保护单位之一。

天津大学建筑群包括主楼(九楼),第一、三、四、五、六、七、八、十一教学楼,土建馆、内燃机大楼、图书馆(北馆)、体育馆、第三学生食堂,1950-1960年代建成的学生宿舍区、六村教职工宿舍等。天津大学建筑群的主楼是1954年由天津大学建筑学院创始人徐中教授设计的。该建筑坐北朝南,分台基、主体、屋顶三段,建筑前的月台台阶直通位于第二层的主入口。山顶、屋脊及比例精确的门窗等建筑风格洗练端庄,奠定了该建筑为天津大学群楼之首的地位。在总平面布局上,该楼位于第五和第六教学楼之间偏北方向,三建筑呈“三足鼎立”之势。
