In1901,RockefellerUniversitywasestablishedinNewYorkastheRockefellerInstituteofMedicine.
Foundedin1970,theAcademyofMedicinewasestablishedtoprotectandimprovethebiomedicalsciencesandhealthprofessions,promoteresearchanddevelopmentrelatedhealthcareandimprovemedicalcare.Theinstituteisalsoconcernedwithresearchinotherfieldsthatarerelatedtohealth,includingbehavioralandsocialsciences,humanities,management,law,physicalsciencesandengineering.Inpursuingitsmission,theinstituteconductsresearchonspecificissues.Themembersoftheassociationcontributetheirknowledgeandprofessionaljudgmenttoformulaterelevantpublicpoliciesbasedontheresultsandrecommendationsofthedevelopment.Theinstitutehas1538activemembers,84foreignaffiliatesand70honorarymembers.

OnJanuary24,RockefellerUniversityannouncedtheappointmentofcellbiologistPaulNurseastheuniversity’snewpresident.PaulNurseplanstotakeoverthenewpositionfull-timeinNovember.Hesaidhewillfocusondevelopingtheuniversity'sabilitytoengageinmultidisciplinaryandtranslationalresearch.PaulNursebelievesthat"RockefellerUniversityhasgreatstrength,especiallyinthefieldsofcellbiologyandneurobiology.Theuniversityhashigh-qualityresearchhospitalsthatallowresearcherstoexplorehowmagicalbiologycancreatenewtreatments."
