Machlup’scontributiontoinformationscienceliesinthestudyofknowledgeandknowledgeindustriesfromaneconomicpointofview.Thisresearchworkbeganinthe1960sandcontinueduntilhisdeath.Inhisbook"TheProductionandDisseminationofKnowledgeintheUnitedStates"(1962),heshowedthechangesintheoccupationalcompositionofthelaborforcesincethe20thcentury:thenumberofpeopleengagedinknowledgeproductionincreased,whilethenumberofpeopleengagedinproductivelabordecreased;andadelineationinthenationaleconomyKnowledgeindustryorinformationindustrysector.Accordingtohiscalculations,theoutputvalueoftheknowledgeindustryintheUnitedStatesin1958accountedforabout29%ofthegrossnationalproduct.Hisdiscoveryledtomanyeconomists'researchontheinformationindustry,forminganewresearchfield─InformationEconomics.
