IETFproducestwokindsofdocuments,oneiscalledInternetDraft,or"InternetDraft",andthesecondiscalledRFC.Itsnamecomesfromhistoricalreasons.Itwasoriginallycalledarequestforopinions,anditsnameInfact,itisnotconsistentwithitscontent.

RFCismoreformal,andithasbeenarchivedinhistory.Generallyspeaking,itscontentwillnotbechangedafteritisapprovedforpublication.TherearemanykindsofRFCs.Thefirstisthatitisastandard,andthesecondisthatitisexperimental.RFCisnothingmorethansayingthatpeoplewanttodosuchathingtogether,tryit,andtheotheristhatitishistorical.,Thisisarecordofpeoplewhohavedonesomethingwrongornotworking.Anotheriscalledintroductoryinformation.

Themostnotoriousandwell-documentedIETFproblemmayhaveoccurredwhenTimBerners-LeewastheleaderoftheWorldWideWebConsortium(W3C)whenhetriedtopersonallyleadWebstandards.developmentof.AccordingtowhathesaidlaterinthebookWeavingtheWeb(WeavingtheWeb),everyonewhohasexperiencedtoomuchwantstoexpresstheirviewsonthefutureoftheirowninnovationHefailedattheIETFmeetinganddidnothing.
In2003and2004,IETFChairmanHaraldAlvestrandcarriedoutmoderateinstitutionalreformstoadapttothefactthattheIETFisalreadyalargeandmaturestandardizationorganization,andisnolongerasmallSpecialworkinggroup.
