InApril1950,theShanghaiMuseumbeganpreparations.
OnDecember21,1952,theShanghaiMuseumwasofficiallyopened.ThesiteislocatedatNo.325NanjingWestRoad,underthejurisdictionoftheShanghaiCulturalRelicsManagementCommittee.
InJuly1953,theShanghaiMuseumwasplacedundertheleadershipoftheShanghaiCulturalBureau.
In1959,itmovedtoNo.16HenanSouthRoad(theoriginalZhonghuiBankBuilding).
InSeptember1960,theShanghaiMunicipalCulturalManagementCommitteeandtheShanghaiMuseumjointlysetupofficeswithtwobrandsandoneteam.
InJanuary1987,theShanghaiMuseumwasupgradedtoadeputybureaulevel.
InOctober1988,theShanghaiCulturalRelicsManagementCommitteeresumeditsindependentorganization,andtheShanghaiMuseumisstillundertheleadershipoftheMunicipalCulturalManagementCommittee.
In1991,a4000squaremeterculturalrelicwarehousewasbuiltat1118LongwuRoad.
In1992,thebranchofShanghaiMuseum-ChinaCoinMuseumwasestablishedat1286HongqiaoRoad.Inthesameyear,theShanghaiMunicipalCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaandtheShanghaiMunicipalPeople'sGovernmentdecidedtobuildanewmuseumfortheShanghaiMuseum.
InAugust1993,theconstructionofthenewShanghaiMuseumbegan.
In1995,thenewbuildingwaspartiallycompletedandopenedonatrialbasis.
OnOctober12,1996,thenewmuseumwasfullycompletedandtheopeningceremonywasheld.
In2016,WengWangedonatedtheSouthernSongDynastypainterLiangKai's"DaoMonarchStatue"totheShanghaiMuseum.
InOctober2018,itwasratedasthenationalresearchandpracticeeducationbaseforprimaryandsecondaryschoolstudents.
OnMarch18,2020,theconstructionoftheShanghaiMuseumEastHallhasresumed.
Exhibitionhalldisplay
TheShanghaiMuseumhasatotalexhibitionareaof12,000squaremeters.DelouCeramicHallandExhibitionHall;thethirdflooristheChineseCalligraphyMuseum,theChinesePaintingMuseum,andtheChineseHistoryInspectionHall;thefourthflooristheChineseAncientJadeMuseum,theChineseCoinsMuseum,theChineseMingandQingFurnitureMuseum,andtheChineseMinorityCraftsPavilionandexhibitionhall.
AncientBronzePavilion:TheexhibitionhalloftheAncientChineseBronzePavilioncoversanareaof1,200squaremeters,andmorethan400piecesofexquisitebronzewarearedisplayed.IntheShangandZhouDynastiesofChina,bronzewareisanimportantpartofancientsocialcivilization.Sign.ThebronzewarescollectedbytheShanghaiMuseumarealsocharacterizedbylonginscriptionsandmoreheavydescriptions.AmongthenewexhibitsaretheJinhouwaresfromtheWesternZhouDynastyandtheearlyQinGongwaresoftheQinDynasty.
AncientSculptureHall:TheexhibitionhalloftheAncientChineseSculptureHallcoversanareaof640squaremeters,includingmorethan120exhibits.Theexhibitionhallusesgold,red,andblackasthebasiccolors,thelotuspetalshapecommonlyusedinBuddhistartasthepartitionwall,theBuddhistnichesinthecavetemplesastheclosets,andtheexposeddisplayform.Exceptforsomewoodcarvingsandpotterysculptures,therearemainlystonesculptures.TherearesculpturesoftheNorthernWei,NorthernQi,NorthernZhou,SuiandTangDynasties,aswellasSouthernstonecarvings,goldandbronzeBuddhastatues,etc.
TheMuseumofAncientCeramics:TheexhibitionhalloftheMuseumofAncientChineseCeramicscoversanareaof1,300squaremeters,withmorethan500exhibitsondisplay.AmongthemarepaintedpotteryandgreypotteryfromtheNeolithicAge,primitiveceladonfromtheShang,Zhou,andSpring-AutumnandWarringStatesperiods,celadonfromtheEasternHanDynasty,andTangSancaifromtheTangDynasty.DuringtheSong,Jin,andLiaoeras,thereweremanykilnsalloverthecountry.DuringtheYuan,Ming,andQingdynasties,JingdezhenbecamethecenterofChina'sporcelainindustry.Theunderglaze,overglaze,andcolor-glazedporcelainswereallondisplay.
PavilionsofCalligraphyofPastDynasties:TheMuseumofCalligraphyofPastDynastiesinChinahascollectedtypicalmasterpiecesfromvariousperiodsinChina,andsystematicallydisplayedthehistoricaltrajectoryofChinesecalligraphyart.Theexhibitionhalladoptsexhibitionframeandauto-sensinglighting.
TheSealsofthePastDynasties:TheSealsofthePastDynastiesofChinaisthefirstartmuseuminChinathatexhibitssealcarvings.Theexhibitionhallcoversanareaof380squaremetersandexhibitsmorethan500sealcarvings.Theentireexhibitiontakesthedevelopmenthistoryofsealartasaclue.FromtheWesternZhouDynastytotheendoftheQingDynasty,itisarepresentativeandartisticmasterpieceselectedfromthecollectionofmorethan10,000sealartifacts.Intheexhibitionhall,withthehelpofhighandlowdisplaycabinets,avarietyoftechnicalmethodsareusedtomakethephysicalobjectsandauxiliarydisplayscooperatewitheachother.
PaintingGalleryofPastDynasties:Theexhibitionhallcoversanareaof1,200squaremeters,anddisplaysmorethan120fineworksofpaintingsofpastdynasties.FromtheTangDynastytomoderntimes,variouspaintingcategoriesarereflected.Thepaintinghasadeeptraditionanduniquenationalstyle.Itisaplasticartwithbrush,inkandsilkpaperasthemaintoolsanddottedlinestructureasthemainmeansofexpression.Inordertoeffectivelyprotecttheexhibitsandfacilitatetheaudiencetoappreciate,theexhibitionroomalsousesinductionspotlightsthatautomaticallyadjustthelight.
EthnicCraftsHall:Theexhibitionhallcoversanareaofmorethan700squaremeters.Itdisplaysethnicminoritycostumecrafts,dyeing,weavingandembroidery,metalcrafts,sculptures,pottery,lacquer,rattanandbambooweaving.Nearly600piecesincludingmaskart.Itshowsthestrangestyleofethnicminorityhandicrafts.
MoneyMuseumofPastDynasties:Theexhibitionhallcoversanareaof730squaremeters,withnearly7,000culturalrelics,whichshowsthehistoricaloverviewoftheoccurrenceanddevelopmentofChinesecurrencyandtheeconomicandculturalexchangesbetweenChinaandforeigncountries.ThereisalsoaspecialroomforSilkRoadCentralAsianancientcoinsdonatedbyDuWeishanandTanDuanyaninthecoinmuseum.
MingandQingHomeFurnishingPavilion:Inthe700squaremeterexhibitionhalloftheFurniturePavilion,morethan100piecesofChinesefurniturefromtheMingandQingdynastiesaredisplayed.
AncientJadeMuseum:Chinaisknownasthe"countryofjade"andhasahistoryofmakingjadeformorethan7,000years.Inancientsociety,jadewasnotonlyusedfordecoration,butalsoasymbolofwealthandpower.

ThebasicpositioningoftheShanghaiMuseumistheMuseumofAncientChineseArt,anditscollection,exhibitionandresearchfocusonancientChineseartworks.Aftermorethanhalfacenturyofdevelopment,asoftheendof2014,theShanghaiMuseumhadatotalof101,925items,including717first-classculturalrelics,34,505second-classculturalrelics,and107,992third-classculturalrelics.

In1958,theShanghaiMuseumsetupaculturalrelicrestorationworkshop,mainlytorestoreandcopythecollectionsofthemuseum.Atthesametime,italsorestoresculturalrelicsandmountspaintingsandcalligraphyforothermuseumsandforeignmuseums.Asof1995,morethan1,400piecesofbronzesandceramicsinthemuseumhavebeenrestored,suchastheoriginalincompleteShangfuDingMao,whichwasbrokenintomorethan70piecesofzigzagthunderpatternintheWesternZhouDynasty.Apairofseverelydamagedearlyspringandautumnwareswererescuedfromscrapcopper.LongErzunhasbeenrestoredtoitsoriginalappearance.Theworkshopalsomountedmorethan1,800paintingsandcalligraphyinthecollection,manyofwhichareimportantculturalrelicsthathavebeencirculating,suchasWangXizhi's"ShangyuTie"andTangSunwei's"GaoyiPictureScroll",etc.,whichhavebeencarefullymountedandproperlyprotected.Especiallythe"MingChenghuaRapSingBook",whichhadbecomea"bookcake"whenitwasunearthed,hasbeenperfectlypreservedthroughthecooperationofculturalrelicsprotectiontechniciansandcalligraphyandpaintingframers.
