TheShanghaiRussianSchoolattachedtoEastChinaPeople’sRevolutionaryUniversity(1949—1950)
AfterthefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChina,inordertolearnfromtheexperienceofsocialistconstructionintheSovietUnion,andinthecaseofanurgentneedforalargenumberofRussiantalents,thethenMayorofShanghai,ComradeChenYi,wasinitiatedbytheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChina.TheEastChinaBureauandtheShanghaiMunicipalPartyCommitteedecidedtoestablishaschooltotrainRussiantalentsinShanghaibasedonthefourthdepartmentofEastChinaPeople’sRevolutionaryUniversity.The"ShanghaiRussianLanguageSchoolattachedtoEastChinaPeople’sRevolutionUniversity"wasdeclaredestablishedinDecember1949.ThisisthefirstforeignlanguageschoolestablishedatthebeginningofNewChina.TheShanghaiMunicipalPartyCommitteeappointedComradeJiangChunfang(afamousRussiantranslator,publisher,andfounderoftheChineseEncyclopediabusiness),thepresidentofTimesPublishingHouse,whohasbeenengagedinRussiannewsandliteraturetranslationandpublishingformanyyearsandiswell-knownintheculturalworld,asthefirstprincipal.TheschoolbuildingwasoriginallylocatedonBaoshanRoad(formerlytheSecondHospitalofNationalJinanUniversity).

EastChinaPeople’sRevolutionaryUniversityAttachedForeignLanguagesSpecialtySchool(1950-1952)ChenYiThemayorhasvisitedmanytimesandaskedtheschoolleaderstolookfartherandtrainprofessionalsinotherlanguagesinadditiontoRussian.AccordingtotheinstructionsofComradeChenYi,inordertomeettheneedsofthecountry’sdiplomaticandforeigntradework,theschooladdedanEnglishclassin1950andwasrenamed"EastChinaPeople’sRevolutionaryUniversityAttachedForeignLanguagesSpecialtySchool".).InApril1951,theschoolestablishedtheDepartmentofOrientalLanguagesandLiteratures,addingBurmese,VietnameseandIndonesianmajors.InMarch1952,morethan150studentsfromtheForeignLanguagesSpecialtySchoolattachedtothePoliticalDepartmentoftheEastChinaMilitaryRegionofNanjingwereincorporatedintotheschool.ByAugust1952,theschoolhadbeguntotakeshape,withfivelanguagesincludingRussian,English,Burmese,VietnameseandIndonesian.

Fromthesecondhalfof1952,thenationalcollegesanduniversitiesimplementedunifiedenrollmentandBegintoadjustthedepartments.AccordingtotheinstructionsoftheMinistryofEducation,theteachersandstudentsoftheDepartmentofOrientalLanguageandLiteratureoftheschoolareallmergedintoPekingUniversity,withonlythemajorofRussian.InSeptemberofthesameyear,theschoolwasrenamed"ShanghaiRussianSpecializedSchool",andinNovemberitwasrenamed"ShanghaiRussianSpecializedSchool".Theschoolsystemwasfixedat3years.TheschoolhiredSovietexpertBiliginskayaforthefirsttimethatyeartoworkintheschooltoguidethecompilationof"RussianReader"andconversationalmaterials.
ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity(1956-1994)
In1956,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolwasrenamed"ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity",andEnglish,ForFrenchandGermanmajors,theschoolsystemwaschangedtofouryears.Atthattime,theschool'sRussianmajorwasstillenrollingnewstudents,andtheEnglish,French,andGermanmajorswereactivelypreparingforschoolwork.Enrollmentwasscheduledfor1957.However,theensuing"anti-rightist"struggleexpanded,andtheenrollmentplansforEnglish,French,andGermanmajorsfailedtoberealized.Theschooldevelopmentwasrelativelyshrinking,andtheschoolhadtotransferaconsiderablenumberofforeignlanguagesfrom1957to1960.Teachersgotoworkinotheruniversitiesandresearchinstitutes.
Atthesametime,studentsfromShandongUniversityandotherinstitutionstransferredtostudy(1957),andtheEnglishmajoroftheForeignLanguageDepartmentofShanghaiFirstNormalUniversitywasmergedintotheschool(1958).Theschoolopenedaneveningschoolin1958,with4languagesincludingEnglish,German,French,andRussian,andthefirstbatchof2,200studentsenrolled.Inthesameyear,theMinistryofFinanceandTradeoftheShanghaiMunicipalPartyCommitteeandtheShanghaiMunicipalForeignTradeBureauestablishedtheDepartmentofForeignLanguagesforForeignTrade,with6languagesincludingEnglish,German,French,Japanese,Arabic,andSpanish.Duringthisperiod,theDepartmentofForeignLanguagesforForeignTradewasfinallytransferredin1978.ShanghaiInstituteofForeignTrade(nowShanghaiUniversityofInternationalBusinessandEconomics).
OnSeptember12,1963,withtheapprovalofthecentralgovernment,ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversitywaslistedasanationalkeyinstitutionofhigherlearningdirectlyundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofEducation.OnOctober31,1964,approvedbythe148thplenarymeetingoftheStateCouncilandsignedbyPremierZhouEnlai,WangJiyu,theformervicepresidentofHeilongjiangUniversityandRussiantranslator,wastransferredtothedeanofShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity.Thisistheschoolsinceitsestablishmentin1949.ThefirstprincipalappointedbytheStateCouncil.Duringthisperiod,theschoolalsoaddedanewtrainingdepartmentforpreparingpersonnelforstudyingabroad,andjointlyestablishedanaffiliatedforeignlanguageschool(namelyShanghaiForeignLanguageSchoolattached)andaffiliatedforeignlanguageelementaryschool(namelyShanghaiForeignLanguageSchoolattachedtotheschool)andotherteachingdepartmentswiththeShanghaiMunicipalEducationBureau.InJune1966,theso-called"cessationofclassestocauserevolution"began.Theschool'spartyandgovernmentworkandvariousmanagementtaskscouldnotbecarriedout.Teachingandresearchwerelimitedtoahalt.Alargenumberofschoolpartyandgovernmentmanagementcadresandteachersatalllevelssufferedvariouspersecutionsandattacks.
In1970,theschoolopenedapilotclasswithatotalof32students(inEnglishandGerman).Subsequently,inaccordancewiththeinstructionsoftheMinistryofEducation,theschoolofficiallyresumedenrollmentinMay1972.Itrecruited536workers,peasants,andsoldiersfrom17provinces,municipalities,andautonomousregionsacrossthecountry.TheywerecompiledintoEnglish,Russian,German,French,Japanese,Arabic,9majorssuchasSpanish,Greek,Italian,etc.,andthelengthofschoolingis3years.Since1973,theAlbanianlanguagemajorhasbeenadded.Asaresult,Shangwaiovercomenumerousdifficultiesandbeganthereconstructionofteachingorderandtherestorationofteachingwork.
Theschoolfirstrestoredtheorganizationalsystemofthedepartment,rebuilttheteachingandresearchsectionandteachinggroup,openedthelibrary,andsoon.Shangwaitrieditsbesttoprovidesolidandsystematicteachingandmeticuloustrainingforthethree-yearprofessionalstudyoftheworkers,peasantsandsoldiersatthattime,includingopening6courses;meanwhile,italsoorganizedtheworkers,peasantsandsoldierstogooutoftheschoolto"openthedoor"tolearnforeignlanguageprofessionalknowledge.Andskillsinpractice.Atthesametime,SISUhasalsoundertakenandcompletedsometrainingandteachingtasksforforeignlanguagetalents.Duringthisperiod,HeilongjiangRussiancorrespondencecourses,YunnanXishuangbannaEnglishshortcoursesandvariousforeignlanguageshortcoursesattendedbymorethan1,400peoplewerealsoheld.InOctober1976,the"GangofFour"wassmashedinonefellswoop,andtheteachingworkofShangwaibegantograduallygetoutofthetroughandre-developed.
In1979,theschool'sschoolsystemwasrestoredtofouryearsandbegantorecruitdegreegraduatestudents,andtheschool'sworkgraduallybecameformal.Inordertomeettheneedsofreformandopeningup,theschoolresumeditsoverseastrainingdepartmentinthesameyear,andestablishedShanghaiForeignLanguageEducationPublishingHouse,variousresearchinstitutions,librarycenters,andforeignlanguagetestcenters.Inthesameyear,thebranchofShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversitywasco-foundedwiththeXuhuiDistrictGovernmentatNo.150PuxiRoad(thesiteoftheformerZiyangMiddleSchool)(renamedtotheSchoolofForeignLanguagesofShanghaiUniversityin1983).

Since1982,theschoolhasbeenpreparingtodevelopfromasingleforeignlanguageschooltoamulti-disciplinaryforeignlanguageuniversityVariousefforts.Since1983,newmajorshavebeenadded,includinginternationaljournalism,internationaltrade,internationaleconomiclaw,internationalaccounting,Chineseasaforeignlanguage,foreignaffairsmanagement,newscommunicationandtechnology.InSeptember1983,theAcademicDegreesCommitteeoftheStateCouncilapprovedtherighttoconferdoctoraldegreesinEnglishandRussian.InMay1985,withtheapprovaloftheMinistryofEducation,theEnglishtranslationoftheschoolwaschangedfromShanghaiForeignLanguageInstitutetoShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity.In1993,undertheleadershipandsupportoftheStateEducationCommissionandtheShanghaiMunicipalGovernment,theschooltooktheleadinimplementingasystemthatcombinesadmissionfees,scholarships,andstudentloansinChineseuniversities.ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity(1994-present)
In1994,withtheapprovaloftheStateEducationCommission,theschoolwasofficiallyrenamed"ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity",andwaslistedastheStateEducationCommissionandOneofthefirstschoolsjointlybuiltbyShanghai.In1996,theschoolpassedthereviewoftheMinistryofEducationandbecameanationalkeyuniversityinthe"211Project".Since1997,theschoolhasbeenthechairmanunitoftheNationalCollegeForeignLanguageTeachingSteeringCommitteeoftheMinistryofEducation.TheschoolestablishedanewcampusinShanghai’sSongjiangUniversityTownin2000,andfirst-yearundergraduatesandgraduatestudentshavealsomovedinsuccessively.In2000,theschool’sMiddleEastInstitutewasselectedasakeyresearchbaseforhumanitiesandsocialsciencesoftheMinistryofEducation;inthesameyear,theschoolestablishedanationalnon-universallanguageconstructionbase.
InJanuary2007,thenewschoolmotto"Behigh-mindedandambitious,learnChineseandforeign"wasformallyestablished.InDecember2009,theschoolcelebratedits60thanniversary.
InMay2013,itwasratedasanationalgraduateemploymentexperienceuniversitybytheMinistryofEducation.InNovember,theMinistryofEducationapprovedthe"ArticlesofShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity."
InSeptember2017,ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversitywasshortlistedamongthefirstbatchofnational"double-class"world-classdisciplineconstructionuniversities;inthesamemonth,ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversitybecameafoundingmemberoftheChina-JapanHumanitiesExchangeUniversityAlliance.InOctober,fourprojects,includingtheShanghaiInstituteofGlobalGovernanceandRegionalCountryStudiesandtheChina-ArabReformandDevelopmentResearchCenter,undertakenbyShanghaiForeignInvestmentCo.,Ltd.wereselectedintothe"ActionPlanforShanghaitoServetheCountry's"BeltandRoad"ConstructionandPlaytheRoleofBridgehead".

InMarch2018,thefirst-classforeignlanguageandliteraturedisciplineconstructionanddevelopmentsummitforumandtheestablishmentoftheChinaUniversityForeignLanguageDisciplineDevelopmentAlliancewereheldinHeldatShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity.InJune,theschoolandtheCommercialPresssignedastrategiccooperationagreement.InFebruary2019,thePropagandaDepartmentoftheShanghaiMunicipalPartyCommitteeandShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversitysignedanagreementtojointlybuildtheSchoolofJournalismandCommunication.InNovember,thefirstdomesticcorpusresearchinstitutewasinauguratedatShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversity;inthesamemonth,asoneofthefirstpilotunitsfortheconstructionofeducationalintegratedmediainthecountry,ShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversityheldtheinaugurationceremonyoftheintegratedmediacenter.
