In976,theprefectofTanzhouZhudongfoundedYueluAcademyundertheHuangdongCaveofYueluMountain,andinitiallysetupthe"LectureHall,FiveRooms,andZhaiPreface52Rooms".In999,stateguardLiYunexpandedtheYueluAcademy,andthebasicregulationsofthethreecomponentsoflectures,collections,andofferingsoftheacademy'sbuildingswereformed.
In1165,pacificationledLiuGongtomaintaintheoriginalregulationsduetothereconstructionoftheoldsite.LiuYunyanaskedZhangShitopresideovertheteaching,andZhuXiandZhangShidiscussedtheirstudies.
DuringtheYuanandMingDynasties,YangmingXinxueandMingShixuewerecarriedforwardintheacademyoneafteranother;theMingcourtorderedthedestructionoftheacademyseveraltimes,butwasnotdirectlyaffected;duringtheZhengdereign,WuShizhongre-plannedtheacademy,andthusformedtheexistingacademy.Thebasiclayoutofthedepartment.
In1668,ZhouZhaonan,thegovernorofHunanintheQingDynasty,initiatedtheacademy,whichbasicallyinheritedthelegacyofMingDynasty.
In1684,thegovernorDingSikongrepairedagain,andinthefollowingyearhewasgiven16kindsofbookssuchasthe"XueDaXingTian"oftheKangxiImperialBookandtheThirteenClassics,whichbecametheexistingacademy'scentralaxisrearregulation.

May1917InMay,YangChangjiandZhuJianfan,YiPeiji,YangShuda,HuYuankui,LiuZongxiangandothersjointlysubmittedadocumenttotheHunanProvincialGovernment,proposingthattheYueluHigherNormalSchoolshouldbetransformedintoaprovincialHunanUniversity.Thebooks,instruments,schoolbuildingsandotherschoolpropertiesoftheschool,QiushiAcademy,higherschool,andexcellentnormalschoolsareproperlypreservedandreservedforthepurposeofrunningtheuniversity.

InJune1918,YangChangjiwasappointedbyMr.CaiYuanpeiasaprofessorofethicsatPekingUniversity.BeforeleavingChangsha,hestillmissedtheopeningofHunanUniversity,soherewrittenhissubmissiontotheprovincialgovernmentintoanarticletitled"OntheNecessityofBuildingaProvincialUniversityinHunan",fromrevitalizingeducation,cultivatingtalents,practicalneeds,andinheritingHistory,academicprosperity,andotheraspectshavesystematically,comprehensivelyandfullydiscussedthepropositionsoforganizingHunanUniversity,andputforwardpreliminaryideasforthefuturedevelopmentscale,subjectsettingandfundinginputofHunanUniversity.
In1924,theHunanProvincialAssemblydecidedtoestablishtheprovincialHunanUniversity,designatedYueluAcademyasthesite,andreorganizedthethreespecializedschoolsofindustry,commerce,andlaw.
OnFebruary1,1926,thethreespecializedschoolsofHunanIndustry,Commerce,andLawandPoliticsmergedtoformtheprovincialHunanUniversity.
In1927,HunanProvincialUniversitywasrenamedHunanUniversityofTechnology.InJulyofthesameyear,HunanUniversityofTechnologyceasedoperations.
InApril1928,theHunanProvincialGovernmentdecidedtorestoretheprovincialHunanUniversity.
OnJuly7,1937,theExecutiveYuanoftheNationalGovernmentofficiallyapprovedtheprovincialHunanUniversitytobecometheNationalHunanUniversity,becomingthefifteenthnationaluniversityatthattime.

In1938,theJapaneseinvadersapproachedHunan,andtheNationalHunanUniversitybeganplanningtomovewestward.TheHunanProvincialDepartmentofEducationoncesuggestedthatHunanUniversitymovewesttoXupu.ButconsideringthatChenxihasathermalpowerplant,sufficientenergyandconvenientwaterandlandtransportation,theschooldecidedtomovetoChenxi.At14:00onApril10ofthesameyear,JapaneseaircraftbombedChangsha.Atthattime,thelargestHunanUniversitylibraryincentralandsouthernChinawasbombed,leavingnoChineseandforeignnames.Fortunately,thepreciousculturalrelicsthattheCentralMuseummovedsouthwardweremovedhereaweekago.TheScienceMuseumwasalsobombed,andalltheequipment,medicinesandequipmentinthemuseumweredestroyedbytheearthquake.Thefirstandfifthstudentdormitorieswereshotandcollapsed,andthefirstandsecondhospitals,factories,andthesecondandfourthstudentdormitoriesweredestroyedbytheearthquake.TheNationalChangshaProvisionalUniversity(latermovedwestwardandrenamedtheNationalSouthwestAssociatedUniversity)temporarilylivinginYueluAcademyalsosufferedseriouslosses.TheNationalHunanUniversityissuedadeclarationtoChineseandforeignculturalcirclesinfourlanguages:English,German,French,andJapanese,expressingitsdeterminationtotheendoftheWarofResistanceagainstJapan,andobtainedextensivesympathyandsupportfromtheinternationalcommunity.InSeptember,HunanUniversityselectedthesiteofDragonMind,DuheRiver,inChenxiCounty,Xiangxi,andbegantobuildaschoolbuilding.Frommid-October,theteachersandstudentsofHunanUniversityarrivedinChenxiinbatches,andthecoursesofficiallystartedinLongmind.
FromApril11,1939toOctober29,1941,theJapanesearmybombedChenxiDragonMindandotherplaces22times.TheChenxibranchofHunanUniversitysufferedseriouslossesandstruggledtoruntheschool.DuringtheBattleofChangsha,theuniversitywasclosed.
FromApril18toMay7,1941,JapaneseplanesonceagainbombedtheheadquartersofHunanUniversityatYueluMountaininChangsha.YueluAcademy’sYushulou,Banxuezhai,andJingyizhaiwereallshotandcollapsed.TheDachengHalloftheConfucianTempleandthestatueofConfuciuswerecompletelyblownup.
In1942,theNationalHunanUniversitywasorderedbytheMinistryofEducationtoestablishtheInstituteofEngineering,andtheMinistryofMinesenrolledtheschool’sfirstgraduatestudents.
InSeptember1945,theWarofResistanceAgainstJapanendedwithJapan'sunconditionalsurrender.OnSeptember15,thesurrenderceremonyofthefourthsurrenderareawasheldontheplaygroundofHunanUniversityinChangsha.At10o'clockintheScienceMuseumofHunanUniversity(nowtheadministrativebuildingoftheschool),GeneralWangYaowu,thecommander-in-chiefoftheFourthFrontArmyoftheNationalRevolutionaryArmyoftheRepublicofChinaandthesurrenderedcommanderoftheChanghengarea,andtherepresentativeoftheU.S.ArmyJinWudereceivedtheJapanese20thCorpscommanderSakanishiIchiroThesurrenderceremonythatwillsurrender.
InOctober1945,HunanUniversitymovedbacktoChangshaYueluMountain.
In1946,theNationalBusinessSchoolwasincorporated.
InAugust1949,HunanProvincewasliberated.FromSeptembertoDecemberofthesameyear,theProvisionalGovernmentofHunanProvinceandtheProvisionalPeople'sGovernmentofCentralPlainssuccessivelydecidedtomergeHunanProvincialKeqiangCollege,HunanProvincialMusicCollege,NationalNormalCollege,andPrivateRepublicofChinaUniversityintoHunanUniversity.
InOctober1949,thePeople’sRepublicofChinawasestablished.InDecemberofthesameyear,thefourthmeetingoftheCentralPeople'sGovernmentCommitteeappointedLiDaasthepresidentofHunanUniversity.
InApril1950,theteachersandstudentsoftheMusicDepartmentandtheMusicSpecializationDepartmentoftheSchoolofEducationweretransferredtoWuhanZhongyuanUniversity(formerlyNationalHenanUniversity,nowZhongnanUniversityofEconomicsandLaw,CentralChinaNormalUniversity),SchoolofEngineeringTheteachersandstudentsoftheDepartmentofWaterConservancyweretransferredtoWuhanUniversity.
OnAugust20,1950,ComradeMaoZedongwrotethenameoftheschool.
InMarch1951,theCollegeofAgriculturetransferredtotheprovincialXiuyeAgricultureandForestryCollegetoformHunanAgriculturalCollege(nowHunanAgriculturalUniversity).
InOctober1952,theDepartmentofMiningandMetallurgyandtheInstituteofMiningandMetallurgyoftheSchoolofEngineeringoftheschoolweretransferredtoformthegeology,miningandmetallurgicaldisciplinesandmajorsofSunYat-senUniversity,GuangxiUniversity,WuhanUniversity,NanchangUniversityandotheruniversitiesTheZhongnanInstituteofMiningandMetallurgywasestablished.
InOctober1952,theteachersandstudentsoftheDepartmentofMiningandMetallurgyandtheInstituteofMiningandMetallurgyoftheSchoolofEngineeringweretransferredtoChangshaandmergedintotheCentralSouthUniversityofMiningandMetallurgy(nowCentralSouthUniversity).InNovemberofthesameyear,theteachersandstudentsoftheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringoftheSchoolofEngineeringweretransferredtoGuangzhouandmergedintoSouthChinaInstituteofTechnology(nowSouthChinaUniversityofTechnology).
In1953,collegesanduniversitiesacrossthecountryadjustedtheirdepartmentsanddepartments.HunanUniversityrevokeditslocationbasedontheCivilEngineeringDepartmentofHunanUniversity,togetherwiththecivilengineeringandconstructionmajorsofWuhanUniversity,NanchangUniversity,GuangxiUniversity,etc.TheCentralSouthSchoolofCivilEngineeringandArchitecturewasestablished.Atthesametime,HunanNormalUniversitywasformedbytheDepartmentofChinese,ForeignLanguages,EducationandHistoryoftheAcademyofSocialSciencesofHunanUniversity,andtheDepartmentofMathematics,Physics,andChemistryoftheAcademyofNaturalSciences.Disciplinesandmajorsweresuccessivelytransferredtorelevantuniversities.
InMay1958,inaccordancewiththespiritofthecentralgovernment,theMinistryofEducation,togetherwiththeMinistryofUrbanConstruction,transferredtheCentralSouthCivilEngineeringandArchitectureInstitutetotheleadershipofHunanProvince.InJuneofthesameyear,HunanInstituteofTechnologywasestablishedonthebasisoftheCentralSouthSchoolofCivilEngineeringandArchitecture.
In1959,HunanInstituteofTechnologywasrestoredtoHunanUniversity,addingliberalartsandsciences,settingup12departments,andredefiningthedevelopmentmodelofacomprehensiveuniversityofliberalarts,sciencesandengineering.In1960,thethreedepartmentsofRailwayArchitecture,BridgesandTunnels,andRailwayTransportandsomepubliccoursesteachingandresearchofficesofHunanUniversitywereseparated,andChangshaRailwayCollege(nowCentralSouthUniversityRailwayCollege)wasestablishedonanothercampus.
InJuly1960,theschool'srailwayconstruction,railwaytransportation,bridgeandtunnelthreedepartmentsweretransferredtoestablishChangshaRailwayInstitute.
In1962,theDepartmentofChineseandBiologyofHunanUniversityweremergedintoHunanNormalUniversity(nowHunanNormalUniversity).
In1963,HunanUniversitywassubordinatetotheFirstMinistryofMachineryIndustryandwaslistedasakeyuniversityundertheMinistry.InMayofthesameyear,thefivemajorsofXiangtanElectricalEngineeringCollegeweremergedintoHunanUniversity.
InMarch1965,allteachersandstudentsoftheShanghaiInstituteofMechanicalEngineeringandNanjingMechanicalManufacturingSchool,aswellasrelatedexperimentalequipment,weretransferredtoHunanUniversity.
In1966,theschoolstoppedenrollingnewstudents.
In1970,theschoolenrolled76studentsintwopilotclassesoftwo-yearmechanismandtwomajorsinelectricalengineering.Thestudentsimplementedthe"factorytofactory"model.
In1972,theschoolenrolled"workers,peasantsandsoldiers"collegestudents.
InMay1975,theschoolimplementedthespiritof"learningfromagricultureandrunningbranchschools"bythehigherlevel,andorganizedtheShaoyangandHengyangbranchesofHunanUniversity,andheldtrainingcoursesforinternalcombustionenginesandelectricians.Thetwocampuseswerecompletelyhandedovertothelocalgovernmentin1978.
In1978,itwaslistedasanationalkeyuniversity,andthecollegeentranceexaminationwasresumednationwide.

In1966,afterthestartofthe"CulturalRevolution",thecollegestoppedenrollingstudents.
InOctober1969,theHunanProvincialRevolutionaryCommitteechangedthecollegetotheninthbrigadeoftheMaoZedongThoughtClass.Soon,theninthbrigadewaschangedtobeinchargeofthe"May7th"GeneralSchoolofHunanProvince.

InMarch1973,theFinanceandTradeOfficeoftheHunanProvincialRevolutionaryCommitteedecidedtochangetheHunanProvincialFinanceandAccountingTrainingCoursetotheHunanProvincialFinanceandAccountingSchool,whichisasecondaryschool.

《文化软实力》：2016年，由中华人民共和国教育部主管、湖南大学主办、国家文化软实力研究协同创新中心承办、张国祚教授担任主编的学术刊物《文化软实力》，在中央有关部门的关心和支持下，经国家新闻出版广电总局正式批准创刊。2016年03月28日正式出刊。该刊物是我国第一种关于文化软实力的国内外公开发行的学术期刊。
《湖南大学报》：是学校党委和行政的机关报，由中共湖南大学委员会主办。1930年创刊，随着学校的建制调整而几度停刊、复刊，数易其名。
《湖大青年》：是共青团湖南大学委员会的机关刊物，创刊于1985年。湖大青年出版的校园宣传品发行范围遍及整个湖南大学，与校内多家媒体联系密切，并与全国主要高校建立了联络机制。2009年6月《湖大青年》作为湖南省唯一入选者当选为中国高校传媒联盟执行主席单位。
《创业邦》（月刊）创刊于2007年6月，是由教育部主管、湖南大学主办，长沙高科技创业者杂志有限公司、爱奇清科（北京）信息科技有限公司协办的中国创业类杂志。以推动中国人创业和中国企业成长为使命和宗旨，关注和报道新兴创业家，同时为他们介绍最新的国际化趋势和商业机会，帮助他们解决成长中遇到的管理、资金、法律、市场和领导力等多重问题。

校徽以岳麓书院正门为中心，以岳麓山为背景，象征着湖南大学这所“千年学府、百年名校”千余年来始终兴学不辍，弦歌相续。 中心圆的上方是毛泽东同志1950年8月20日亲笔题写的“湖南大学”校名，下方为湖南大学校名的英译“HunanUniversity”。正下方的飘带上两组数字“976”、“1926”，分别为岳麓书院创建和湖南大学定名的时间。两侧共有十四瓣枫叶，代表当时（1986年）全校设立的14个系。 |

建筑文化

湖南大学校园依山而建，经历了一个由岳麓山向东慢慢扩展到湘江边的过程。1903年岳麓书院改制后，在其原址上成立的各个学校大多仍以原来的书院建筑为校舍。岳麓书院的建筑大部分为明清遗构，以黑白色调为主，为中国现存规模最大的书院建筑群。1926年湖南大学正式创立，开始在书院周围兴建新的教学设施。明清建筑群
岳麓书院历史上经历多次战火，曾七毁七建，现存主要建筑是明清遗构。上世纪以来，经过几次大修，一些毁于战火的建筑得到了重修。岳麓书院古建筑在布局上采用中轴对称、纵深多进的院落形式。主体建筑如头门、大门、二门、讲堂、御书楼集中于中轴线上，讲堂布置在中轴线的中央。斋舍、祭祀专祠等排列于两旁。中轴对称、层层递进的院落，除了营造一种庄严、神妙、幽远的纵深感和视觉效应之外，还体现了儒家文化尊卑有序、等级有别、主次鲜明的社会伦理关系。
岳麓书院占地面积21000平方米，主体建筑有头门、二门、讲堂、半学斋、教学斋、百泉轩、御书楼、湘水校经堂、文庙等，并先后恢复重建设了延宾馆、文昌阁、崇圣祠、明伦堂及包括供祀孔子、周濂溪、二程、朱熹、张轼、王船山、罗典等的六大专祠建筑原貌，清代书院中的园林和书院八景也全部得到恢复。岳麓书院为中国现存规模最大的书院建筑群。
近代建筑群
湖南大学建立之初，以岳麓书院为一院，同时开始在书院周围兴建新的教学建筑，包括二院、科学馆、图书馆、工程馆、大礼堂、办公楼、静一斋、学生一、二、三、四舍等，均为中国近代建筑大师蔡泽奉、柳士英、刘敦桢等设计，其中尤以柳士英的作品为最多。这些建筑外形古朴典雅，有明显的文人建筑气质，强调时代性、民族性和地方特色，尤其是圆形、曲线在这些建筑中的运用，体现了“刚柔并济、动静结合”的设计思想，以致人们称之为“柳氏圆圈”。在长沙市公布的第一批35处近现代保护建筑中，湖南大学就有5处，包括老图书馆、科学馆、大礼堂、工程馆、二院（现物理实验楼）；在第二批21处近现代保护建筑中，有七舍、原一舍（现九舍）、胜利斋三处。
湖南大学早期建筑群于2013年获批全国重点文物保护单位。
财院校区
湖南大学财院校区，前身为始建于1958年的湖南财经学院，是新中国最早建立的一批高等财经院校之一，2000年与湖南大学合并，成为湖南大学北校区，2016年更为现名。
