HistoryoftheUniversityofTechnology

HarbinSino-RussianIndustrialSchool(i.e.HarbinIndustrialThepredecessoroftheuniversity)wasestablishedinMay1920,andtheopeningceremonywasheldonOctober17.Atthattime,thereweretwosectionsofrailwayconstructionandelectricalandmechanicalengineering.Thefirstthreeclassesenrolledatotalof103students.Thecreditsystemisimplemented.Theschoolsystemisfouryears,andallteachingisinRussian.
OnApril2,1922,theschoolwasrenamedtheSino-RussianUniversityofTechnology.Theschoolwaschangedfromfouryearstofiveyears.TheoriginaltwodepartmentswerechangedtotheDepartmentofRailwayArchitectureandtheDepartmentofMechanicalandElectricalEngineering.Graduateswhopassthedefenseoftheexaminationcommitteeareawardedthetitleofengineer.
OnFebruary4,1928,theschool'saffiliationchanged,anditwasledbytheEasternProvinceSpecialEconomicZoneoftheRepublicofChina,andtheschoolnamewaschangedtoEasternProvincialSpecialEconomicZoneUniversityofTechnology.
OnOctober20,1928,theSchoolofLawandPoliticsandtheSchoolofBusinessweremerged,andtheschoolwasofficiallynamedHarbinInstituteofTechnology,underthemanagementoftheSovietUnion.
Inthespringof1931,itbegantorecruitgraduatestudents.
AsJapaneseimperialisminvadedtheNortheast,theschoolwascompletelytakenoverbytheJapanesein1935,andclassesweretaughtinJapanese,andChineseandJapanesestudentswereappointed.
OnJanuary1,1936,theschoolwasrenamedtheNationalHarbinHigherIndustrialSchool.
AfterJanuary1937,theschoolwascompletelytransferredtothestageofrunningschoolsaccordingtotheJapanesemethod.
FromJanuary1,1938,theschoolwasrenamed"NationalHarbinInstituteofTechnology".Sincethen,theschoolnameofHarbinInstituteofTechnologyhasbeeninuseeversince.
Afterthevictoryofthe"September3"WarofResistancein1945,HarbinInstituteofTechnologywasjointlymanagedbythegovernmentsofChinaandtheSovietUnionandledbytheChinaRailwayAdministration.ThepurposeofrunningtheschoolatthistimewastotrainengineeringandtechnicalpersonnelfortheZhongchangRailway.Theschoolsystemwasfiveyears,andallclassesweretaughtinRussian.BeforethenewChinatookoverin1950,ithadcivilengineering,electricalmachinery,engineeringeconomics,mining,chemicalengineering,andEasterneconomics.DepartmentandFoundationStudies.
Fromtheestablishmentoftheschoolin1920tobeforetheliberation,HarbinInstituteofTechnologyhasbeenrunningschoolsinRussianorJapanesestyleandtaughtinRussianorJapanese.ThishasmadeHarbinInstituteofTechnologyadistinctiveinternationalcharactersinceitsestablishment.
From1920untilthelastgroupofstudentsintheRussianlanguageclassgraduatedattheendof1938,theHarbinInstituteofTechnology,whichisaRussian-styleschool,hastrained1267graduates,including382Chinesestudentsand885SovietandPolishstudents.GraduatesaredistributedinChina,Taiwan,HongKong,theSovietUnion,Australia,Poland,theUnitedStates,Canada,NewZealand,andBrazil.TheygenerallyacceptedtheearlyacademiceducationintheWestandacquiredadvancedscientificandtechnologicalknowledgeinEuropeatthattime.HisdiplomawasrecognizedbytheSovietUnionandotherEuropeancountries.Inthe30yearsbeforetheliberation,HarbinInstituteofTechnologytrainedmanyscholarswhowerewell-knowninthefieldofscienceandtechnologyeducation,andsomebecamesocialactivists.
GoldenAge
In1949,HarbinInstituteofTechnologybegantorecruitgraduatestudentsfromalloverthecountryandwasoneoftheearliestuniversitiesinChinatotraingraduatestudents.
OnJune7,1950,theCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinatelegraphedtheNortheastBureau:"TheZhongchangRailwayhasdecidedtohandovertheHarbinInstituteofTechnologytotheChinesegovernment."HealsoinstructedHarbinInstituteofTechnologyto"focusonrecruitinglecturers,teachingassistants,andgraduatestudentsfromvariousuniversitiesinChina.TheymainlystudyRussianandwillbeassignedtoteachinvariousuniversitiesaftertwoyearsofgraduation."ThisisanimportantsignthatHarbinInstituteofTechnologyhasreturnedtotheembraceofNewChinaandenteredthestageofcomprehensivetransformationandexpansion.Later,theschooldecidedthatJune7wastheanniversaryofthefoundingofHarbinInstituteofTechnology.
In1951,HarbinInstituteofTechnologywasdesignatedbythestateasoneofthetwoinstitutionsforChinesehighereducationtolearnfromtheSovietUnion."Anditiswell-knownthroughoutthecountry.FromJuly1951toJune1956,theschoolheld5teachingmethodsandscienceandtechnologyseminars,andwascommissionedbytheMinistryofHigherEducationtoholdtwonationalelectromechanicalconferences,eachofwhichwasattendedbydozensofbrothercollegesanduniversities.HarbinInstituteofTechnologyhasbecomeawindowforuniversitiesacrossthecountrytolearnfromtheexperienceofSovieteducation.
In1952,thesystemofHarbinInstituteofTechnologywaschangedto5years,andtheengineeringtrainingofstudentswasstrengthened,sothatstudentshavetheabilitytoundertakeengineeringandtechnicaltasksindependently.Itisknownthroughoutthecountryasthe"cradleofengineers".
Fromthe1950stothemid-1960s,undertheleadershipofFengZhongyun,LiChang,ChenKangbai,andhigh-speedrailways,HarbinInstituteofTechnologyenteredthestageofmajorconstruction,majordevelopment,andmajorimprovementonthebasisofreconstructionandexpansion.Thecountryhastrainedtensofthousandsofstudents.
Duringthisperiod,theenrollmentscaleoftheschoolcontinuedtoexpand.Themaximumnumberofstudentsintheschoolreachedmorethan8,000.Theteachingteamgrewrapidly.In1957,ithasgrowntomorethan800people,withanaverageofonly27.5yearsold.Theyhaveundertakenalltheteaching,Thescientificresearchtaskisknownasthe"eighthundredheroes"ofHarbinInstituteofTechnology;thescientificresearchworkhasbeengreatlydevelopedandimproved,andvariousmajorshaveestablishedafixedscientificandtechnologicalcooperationrelationshipwithsomefactoriesandresearchinstitutes.InordertoruntheHarbinInstituteofTechnologywell,afterliberation,agroupofyoungandexperiencedleadersweresenttoHarbinInstituteofTechnologytotakeupleadershippositions;agroupofacademicallyaccomplishedprofessorswererecruitedortransferredtoHarbinInstituteofTechnology;67Sovietexpertsand3CzechexpertssuccessivelyHewashiredtoHarbinInstituteofTechnologytohelptheschoolbuildmajorsurgentlyneededbythecountryandtrainteachersandstudents;abatchofadvancedinstrumentsandequipmentwereshippedbackfromtheSovietUnion,makingHarbinInstituteofTechnology'slaboratoriesandpracticefactoriesoneofthetopinthecountry.
InOctober1954,theMinistryofHigherEducationidentifiedsixuniversitiesasthefirstbatchofnationalkeyuniversities,andHarbinInstituteofTechnologybecametheonlykeyuniversityoutsideBeijing.
In1957,HarbinInstituteofTechnologyhasgrownto7departmentsand23majors,basicallybuildingitintoanewmultidisciplinaryindustrialuniversitythatlearnsfromtheSovietteachingsystem.
In1958,inaccordancewithComradeDengXiaoping’sinstructionof"HarbinInstituteofTechnologytobesophisticated"andtheneedsofthedevelopmentofthesituationatthattime,HarbinInstituteofTechnologymademajoradjustmentstotheprofessionalsettingsandcreatedanumberofcutting-edgemajors,whichwerebasicallycompletedby1962.Thetransitionfromciviliantomilitaryandcivilian,formingacomprehensiveprofessionalsystemwithcomplementarydisciplines,becomingamultidisciplinaryuniversityservingnationaldefensescienceandtechnologyandnationaleconomicconstruction.
In1960,theschoolcooperatedwith107factoriesinHarbininthetechnologicalinnovationandtechnologicalrevolutionmovementtocompletemorethan460mechanizedautomationprojects.
TenYearsofTurmoil
TheCulturalRevolutionthatbeganin1966severelydisruptedthenormalteachingandresearchorderofHarbinInstituteofTechnology.
Inthespringof1970,accordingtotheinstructionsofsuperiors,afewpersonnelandmostofthematerialsofHarbinInstituteofTechnologymovedsouthtoChongqing,andmergedwiththeHarbinMilitaryIndustryDepartmentIItoformChongqingUniversityofTechnology;thepartstayinginHarbinmergedwithHeilongjiangInstituteofTechnologyandHarbinInstituteofElectricalEngineering.ThenewHarbinInstituteofTechnology.
InAugust1973,theStateCouncilandtheCentralMilitaryCommissiondecidedtoreturnChongqingUniversityofTechnologytothenorthandrestoretheoriginalHarbinInstituteofTechnology.Afterseveraltossings,theschoolwasseverelydamaged.
Rebuildingglory
In1977,theenrollmentofundergraduateswasresumed;in1978,theenrollmentofpostgraduateswasresumed;in1982,theenrollmentofdoctoralstudentsbegan.
In1984,itwasonceagainlistedasoneofthefifteenkeyuniversitiesinthecountry.Inthesameyear,itbecameoneofthefirstbatchof22collegesanduniversitiestopilotgraduateschoolsinthecountry,markingthebeginningofanewstageofdevelopmentforthegraduateeducationofHarbinInstituteofTechnology.
In1992,theHarbinInstituteofTechnologyHigh-techParkwasfoundedtoexploreanewschool-runningmodelof"oneschooldistrict,onedistrictsupplementaryschool,campusintegration,oneschool,twosystems".
In1996,itbecameoneofthefirstcollegestoenterthe"211Project"construction.
In1999,thebeetsugarindustryscientificresearchinstituteoftheformerMinistryofLightIndustry(foundedin1956)wasmergedintoHarbinInstituteofTechnology.
InMay1999,hewasawardedthe"May1LaborAward"bytheAll-ChinaFederationofTradeUnions.
InNovember1999,itwasselectedintothe"985Project"andbecameoneofthenineuniversitiesthatthecountryfocusedonbuildinginaccordancewiththegoalofworld-renownedhigh-leveluniversities;onthe14th,theNationalDefenseScienceandTechnologyCommission,theMinistryofEducationandHeilongjiangProvinceOnthisday,thegovernmentjointlysignedanagreementtofocusonthejointconstructionofHarbinInstituteofTechnology.
InJune2000,HarbinInstituteofTechnologyandHarbinInstituteofArchitecture,oneoftheeightfamousarchitecturalschoolsofthesameorigininChina,HarbinUniversityofArchitecture(akeyuniversityoftheMinistryofConstruction,andHarbinInstituteofTechnologyarethefirstbatchofdoctoraldegreeawardingunitsinthecountry)MergedandformedthenewHarbinInstituteofTechnology.
In2001,thefirstbatchofnationaldemonstrationsoftwareacademieswereapprovedfortrialoperation.
In2002,withtheapprovaloftheMinistryofEducation,theHarbinInstituteofTechnologyShenzhenGraduateSchoolwasestablishedincooperationwiththeShenzhenMunicipalGovernment.Inthesameyear,theWeihaibranchofHarbinInstituteofTechnologywasrenamedHarbinInstituteofTechnology(Weihai).
In2007,itbecameoneofthefirstpilotuniversitiesforthereformofthegraduatetrainingmechanism.Inthesameyear,itbecameoneofthefirsttenuniversitiesintheengineeringeducationreformpracticeprojectjointlyimplementedbytheMinistryofEducationandtheChineseAcademyofEngineering.
In2011,theschoolwasselectedintothe“ExperimentalProgramforTrainingTop-notchStudentsinBasicSubjects”(referredtoasthe“EverestProject”)bytheMinistryofEducation.
In2009,theCentralOrganizationDepartmentandtheMinistryofEducationdesignatedHarbinInstituteofTechnologyasthefirstbatchofuniversitybasesfortheeducationandtrainingofcadresacrossthecountry.
In2010,theMinistryofIndustryInformationTechnology,thePeople'sGovernmentofShandongProvince,andthePeople'sGovernmentofWeihaisignedatripartiteagreementtojointlybuildHarbinInstituteofTechnology(Weihai).Inthesameyear,hewasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof"OutstandingEngineerEducationandTrainingProgram"universitiesbytheMinistryofEducation.
In2012,thefirstbatchofcollegesanduniversitiesselectedfortheimplementationofthenationalcollegestudentinnovationandentrepreneurshiptrainingprogram.
InApril2013,thefirstbatchofuniversitieswereselectedastheleaduniversitiesofthe"2011Plan".InMay,itwasratedasanationalgraduateemploymentmodeluniversitybytheMinistryofEducation.
InApril2014,thecityschoolsignedaschool-runningagreementtojointlybuildHarbinInstituteofTechnology(Shenzhen).InMay,theMinistryofEducationapprovedtheShenzhenGraduateSchoolofHarbinInstituteofTechnologytoprepareforundergraduateeducation;theShenzhenMunicipalGovernmentandHarbinInstituteofTechnologysignedanewcooperativeeducationagreement.Preparingtojointlybuild"HarbinInstituteofTechnology(Shenzhen)"withacompleteundergraduate,master,anddoctoraleducationsystem.

Accordingtotheschool'sofficialwebsiteinMarch2020,HarbinInstituteofTechnologyhasparticipatedin14of16majornationalscienceandtechnologyprojectsincludingthelunarexplorationproject,andhasachievedanumberofmajorlandmarkresultsinaerospace,robotics,smallsatellites,equipmentmanufacturing,newenergy,newmaterialsandotherfields.
Theschoolhassuccessfullydevelopedandlaunchedthe"Experiment1","Experiment3","Kaizhou-1","Kaizhou-2"and"Lilac-2"satellitessuccessively,settingarecordfordomesticuniversitiesinChinaArecordoffivebattlesandfivevictoriesinthedevelopmentofsmallsatellites.
Thereare7researchesonadvancedmicrosatelliteplatformtechnology,spacemanipulatortechnology,satellite-to-groundlaserlinktest,fast-boat-star-arrowintegrationtechnology,shootingrangephotoelectricandcontrolsysteminShenguangIIIlaserdevice,etc.TheprojectwasselectedasoneofthetoptenscientificandtechnologicaladvancesinChineseuniversities.
"Ultra-precisionspecialshapemeasurementtechnologyanddevice"and"Star-to-groundlaserlinksystemtechnology"wonthefirstprizesofthe2006and2014NationalTechnicalInventionAwards.AcademicianLiuYongtanwonthe2018NationalHighestScienceandTechnologyAward.
Duringthedevelopmentofthe"Shenzhou"seriesofspacecraft,HarbinInstituteofTechnologyhasovercomeKM6,returncapsuleweldingdeformationcorrectiontechnology,three-axissimulationexperimentturntable,astronauttraining"simulatedweightlessnesstrainingtank",astronautsTherearemanytechnicaldifficultiessuchasthecabinreflectorbody.Duringtherendezvousanddockingmissionbetweenthe"Tiangong-1"targetaircraftandthe"Shenzhou"seriesspacecraft,theschoolprovidedmorethan20technicalsupports.Forthisreason,HarbinInstituteofTechnologyhaswonthehonorarytitleof"OutstandingContributionstoChina'sMannedSpaceProject"andistheonlyuniversityunitinthecountry.In2012,HarbinInstituteofTechnologywasawardedthe"SuccessfulCommemorativeMedalfortheMannedRendezvousandDockingMissionofTiangong1andShenzhou9".
