History
TheideaofestablishingatechnicalschoolinGeorgiawasfirstproposedin1865duringthereconstructionperiodoftheUnitedStates.In1882,approvedbytheGeorgiaStateAssembly,politicianNathanielEdwinHarrisledaspecialcommitteetovisitcollegesanduniversitiesinthenortheasternUnitedStatestoobservetheoperationoflocaltechnicalschools.TheschoolstheyvisitedincludedtheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologyandtheWorcesterInstituteofIndustrialScience(nowWorcesterPolytechnicInstitute).OnOctober13,1885,thethengovernorofGeorgiasignedadecreetocreatetheGeorgiaSchoolofTechnology(GeorgiaSchoolofTechnology).
In1905,thethen-U.S.PresidentTheodoreRooseveltvisitedthecampus,gaveaspeechonthestepsoftheschool’slandmarkTechTower,andshookhandswitheverystudentintheschool.
In1948,theGeorgiaInstituteofTechnologywasrenamedGeorgiaInstituteofTechnologyinordertoreflecttheschool’sdevelopmentandfocusonhighertechnologyandscientificresearchuniversities.Unlikeotherinstitutionsofhigherlearningwithsimilarnames(suchasMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologyandCaliforniaInstituteofTechnology),GeorgiaInstituteofTechnologyisapublicuniversity.
Techenrolleditsfirstfemalestudentin1952,butwomencouldnottakeallcoursesuntil1968.IndustrialManagementisthelastcourseopentowomen.FulmerHall,thefirstfemaledormitory,openedin1969.Atthebeginningofthe2009springsemester,30.3%ofcollegestudentsand25.3%ofgraduatestudentswerefemalestudents.In1959,ameetingattendedby2,741studentsvotedoverwhelminglyinfavorofanapplicationforadmissionsregardlessofrace.Threeyearslater,justoneandahalfyearsaftertheracialviolenceattheUniversityofGeorgia,GeorgiaInstituteofTechnologybecamethefirstuniversitytoabolishapartheidwithoutacourtorder.Polytechnicstudentsdidnotreactverymuchtothismove;asformerAtlantaMayorWilliamHartsfielddescribed,thosestudents“havenotimetotakecareofthosethings.”Similarly,thestudents'reactiontotheVietnamWarandtheinvolvementoftheUnitedStatesintheCambodianCivilWarwasnotgreat.TheStudentUnionproposedaformalresolutiontosupportatrucewithVietnam,andthecollegeandotheruniversitiesintheUniversityofGeorgiasystemwereorderedtoclosetheschoolfortwodays.
In1988,thethenpresidentJohnPatrickCrecinelaunchedaplantoreorganizetheuniversity.Atthattime,theuniversityhadonlythreeschools:theSchoolofEngineering,theSchoolofManagement(CollegeofManagement),andtheSchoolofScienceandHumanities.ReferredtoasCOSALS.PresidentCreinereorganizedthelattertwocollegesintotheCollegeofComputing,theCollegeofSciences,andtheIvanAllenCollegeofManagement,PolicyandInternationalAffairs(IvanAllenCollegeofManagement,PolicyandInternationalAffairs).Crecinehasneverheardaboutthesechanges,somanyemployeesdonotlikehistop-downmanagementstyle;despitethis,thechangeshaveworked.Crecinealsoplayedanimportantroleinensuringthesuccessofthe1996AtlantaSummerOlympics.Alarge-scaleconstructionprojectbegan.TheuniversitybuilttheWestCampus,whichwasmainlyusedasanOlympicVillageandsignificantlygentrifiedMidtownAtlanta.UndergraduateLivingCenter,FourthStreetApartments,SixthStreetApartments,EighthStreetApartments,HemphillApartments,andCenterStreetApartmentsApartments)arepreparedforathletesandtourists.TheGeorgiaTechAquaticCenter(GeorgiaTechAquaticCenter)wasbuiltspecificallyforswimmingcompetitions,andtheAlexanderMemorialColiseumwasrenovated.TheschoolalsoerectedtheKesslerCampanile(KesslerCampanile)asalandmarksymboloftheuniversityonTV.Sincethen,theKesslerClockTower(Campanile)hasbeenrememberedbythestudentsunderthenickname"TheShaft."
In1994,G.WayneCloughbecamethefirstgraduatealumniastheprincipaloftheschool;histenurewentthroughthe1996SummerOlympics.In1998,hedividedtheIvanAllenCollegeofManagement,Policy,andInternationalAffairsintotheIvanAllenCollegeofLiberalArts(IvanAllenCollegeofLiberalArts)andtheCollegeofManagement(CollegeofManagement).Aspartofacontroversialreorganizationplanin1990,theformerprincipalCrecindemotedtheSchoolofManagement"College"totheSchoolofManagement"School".Duringhistenure,hefocusedmainlyontherapiddevelopmentofthecollege.Expandedandreorganizedundergraduatescanparticipateinresearchprojectsandestablishaninternationalcooperationprogram.OnMarch15,2008,hewasappointedasSecretary-GeneraloftheSmithsonianInstitution(SmithsonianInstitution),andhisappointmentwasJuly1,2008.AcademicAffairsProfessorGarySchuster,ExecutiveVicePresidentofAcademicAffairsofChangheUniversity,wasappointedasinterimpresidentandtookofficeonJuly1,2008.OnApril1,2009,formerUniversityofColoradoatBoulderpresidentGP"Bud"PetersonbecameHebecamethe11thPresidentofGeorgiaInstituteofTechnology.OnApril20,2010,GeorgiaInstituteofTechnologywasinvitedtojointheAssociationofAmericanUniversitiesandbecamethefirstnewmemberofthisinstitutionsince2002.
