Compatible machine

The concept of a compatible machine

In 1983, IBM adopted the 8088 chip produced by INTEL as the CPU (central processing unit) of the computer to produce a personal computer. Since a lot of software was designed based on 8088 at that time, many hardware manufacturers used CPUs compatible with the 8088 chip produced by INTEL. In view of the advanced position of IBM in this field, people regard the computer produced by IBM that uses the chip produced by INTEL as the CPU as the original machine, and the computers produced by other companies are called compatible machines.

In the 1990s, the brand-named complete machines were slowly called brand-name machines, and the computers that were purchased with accessories or recommended by the installation shop were all called compatible machines. In fact, there is no real PC brand machine manufacturer in China, including Lenovo and Founder, because the core computer technology is controlled in the United States, Japan and other countries, and most of the production lines are in foreign countries. The domestic ones are basically processed and assembled with supplied materials. Then sell it under its own brand.

IBM PC compatible machine refers to a personal computer compatible with IBM's PC. The early IBM compatible computers were mainly based on the x86 series CPU, using the ISA bus, and capable of running PC-DOS/MS-DOS systems.

"IBM PC compatible machine" is generally used to refer to PCs of 80486 and before, and then gradually replaced by the term "standard PC".

Development history

In the early 1980s, there were a large number of personal computers with different standards on the market, such as Apple machines, TRS-80 machines, and Japanese PC-9801 machines. In August 1981, IBM introduced the IBM PC. In 1982, IBM published all the technical information on IBM PCs except BIOS, thus forming an "open standard" for PCs, allowing standard components from different manufacturers to be interchangeable. Open standards have gathered a large number of board card manufacturers and complete machine manufacturers, which has greatly promoted the industrial development speed of PCs. By the early 1990s, there were only two main series of IBM PC compatible computers and Macintosh computers left in the personal computer market, and the number of IBM compatible computers occupied an absolute dominant position. With the development of IBM compatible computers, computing power has greatly improved, and even eroded the market share of minicomputers.

At the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, the Ministry of Electronics Industry of my country presided over the research of several units such as Tsinghua University and developed an Apple compatible computer for the Chinese learning machine.
