Historical evolution
In November 1952, the Central Iron and Steel Research Institute was established, initially as the "Steel Industry Laboratory of the Ministry of Heavy Industry".
In January 1955, the "Iron and Steel Industry Laboratory" was renamed the "Iron and Steel Industry Comprehensive Research Institute".
In January 1958, the "Comprehensive Research Institute of Iron and Steel Industry" was renamed "Iron and Steel Research Institute of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry".
In October 1973, the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry decided to merge the Building Research Institute, some units of the Central Iron and Steel Research Institute and the Beijing Metallurgical Instrument Factory to form the "Metallurgical Automation Research Institute".
In January 1979, the "Iron and Steel Research Institute of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry" was named the "General Iron and Steel Research Institute of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry".
