ThesynonymfortheMinistryofNationalDefense(MinistryofNationalDefenseofthePeople’sRepublicofChina)generallyreferstotheMinistryofNationalDefenseofthePeople’sRepublicofChina.TheStateCouncilestablishestheMinistryofNationalDefense,andallmilitarytasksthatneedtobebornebythegovernmentwillbeimplementedthroughtheMinistryofNationalDefenseorinthenameoftheMinistryofNationalDefenseaftertheStateCouncilmakescorrespondingdecisions.WhileacceptingtheleadershipoftheStateCouncil,theMinistryofNationalDefensealsoacceptstheleadershipoftheCentralMilitaryCommission.

TheMinistryofNationalDefenseofthePeople'sRepublicofChinaisthemilitaryworkdepartmentoftheStateCouncil.Itsbasicfunctionsare:unifiedmanagementoftheconstructionofthenationalarmedforces,suchastherecruitment,establishment,equipment,training,militaryscientificresearch,militaryranks,andsalariesofthepeople'sarmedforces.Therefore,theMinistryofNationalDefensedoesnothaveactualmilitarycommand.

TheMinistryofNationalDefenseisthemilitarydepartmentoftheStateCouncilofthePeople’sRepublicofChina.AfterthefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChina,theMinistryofNationalDefensewasestablishedinSeptember1954.ItissubordinatetotheStateCouncilandismainlyresponsibleforthespecificworkofnationaldefenseconstruction.
